Propolis for seasonal ills

During the cold season, colds are known to increase. Among the many remedies that nature puts at our disposal, one of considerable help comes from the bees.

We speak of Propolis, a complex mixture of natural substances that insects collect from plants rich in balms and rework with enzymes secreted by their salivary glands.

Propolis and its history

The name of propolis derives from the Greek " propolis " which means "to defend the city", that is to say the hive: in fact, the bees use it to seal the walls where the queen bee lays eggs, to protect them from attack by bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Propolis is perhaps the oldest drug known, so much so that its origin dates back to 40, 000 years ago. The Egyptians, 6, 000 years ago, were the first to use Propolis, to treat infections of the skin and the respiratory system, fever, inflammation of the oral cavity and as a disinfectant and wound healing.

Since then it has spread throughout the world, but it remained a somewhat mysterious remedy until 1960 when the French researcher Pierre Lavie confirmed its numerous properties, among which we recall the antiviral and antibactericidal properties.

The properties of propolis

Thanks to the organic acids and the polyphenolic substances it contains, it guarantees its dual function: bacteriostatic, which prevents the multiplication of germs; of bactericidal type, which allows to kill them. This activity is further enhanced by its ability to increase immune defenses against viruses and bacteria.

The immunostimulant action of propolis increases the resistance of the organism, stimulating, thanks to the flavonoids present, the synthesis of antibodies and the activity of macrophages, capable of incorporating the foreign pathogen and digesting it. Its ability to stimulate the general immune system helps prevent colds and fight them if they occur.
