Lumbar massage therapy, what it is and what it is used for

Low back pain is often the consequence of multiple causes, sometimes joined together: it may depend on an incorrect posture held for a prolonged time, excessive tension of the muscles due to psychophysical stress or is often a problem linked to the consequences of overweight and sedentary lifestyle.

Other effects are due to cold, humidity, muscle strains, excessive strain. To generate back pain there is then the degeneration and the exit of the intervertebral disc, which functions as a natural shock absorber and prevents the vertebrae from entering between them in friction. Pain is usually located on the lower back, between the edges of the costal arch and the limits of the gluteal muscles.

In addition to purely orthopedic related disorders (disc herniation, lumbar osteoarthritis, scoliosis or lordosis, osteoporosis), problems related to back pain affecting the urogenital system, neurological and intra-abdominal disorders may occur. Pain is the first symptom, which manifests itself as an acute, continuous or periodic pain, which generally radiates towards the buttock. Pain depends on nerve stimulation and is often associated with an important reflex contracture of the paravertebral musculature, which in turn is responsible for a "block" that immobilizes the lumbar spine.

How can lumbar massage intervene?

How lumbar massage therapy works

Massotherapy is a set of different maneuvers performed on the body to relieve muscle or joint pain, release tension and muscle fatigue, to tone the volume of some tissues but also to improve the psychic well-being of the subject. But it is not limited only to the physical.

Lumbar pain, with consequent irradiation along the course of the sciatic or femoral nerves, comes from the vertebral column which, normally, is not affected by the benefits of massage therapy.

In some cases, however, benefits are possible when the large muscles on the sides of the spine are affected. In these cases, therefore, a series of massages, with lumbar massage therapy, allows you to give some relief. However, it is always necessary to associate a specific program of exercises, so as not to reappear after a short time.
