Neuralgia: symptoms, causes, all remedies

Neuralgia is the irritation of a nerve accompanied by sudden and violent pain . Let's find out better.

Symptoms of neuralgia

The symptomatic may be due to:

  • local morbid factors of a technical nature (cold, freezing) or mechanical (compression, stretching, crushing, etc.);
  • general morbid factors of a toxic, toxic, external, internal toxic, rheumatizing nature.

The neuralgic pain usually comes suddenly and is violent, often unbearable and tends to disappear suddenly or almost as quickly.

Causes

Essential (or primitive) neuralgia is the one whose cause is unknown; symptomatic or secondary neuralgia occurs instead when the cause is known.

We talk about trigeminal neuralgia in the case of facial neuralgia; neuralgia of the large ischial nerve (in practice, sciatica ); neuralgia of the nerves of the arm; neuralgia of the intercostal nerves.

The causes of neuralgia of the first type are linked to decayed teeth for caries, inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (sinusitis), of the dental alveolus (osteitis), of the ear (otitis) and various other inflammatory processes.

Diagnosis

There is no specific examination to diagnose neuralgia, but it is based exclusively on clinical history. Neuralgia can affect many nerves and the diagnosis varies depending on the entity and the area involved.

NATURAL CARE AGAINST NEVALGIA

Feeding in case of neuralgia

Neuralgia is often an inflammation of the nerves with very different causes. Nutrition must therefore be based on anti-inflammatory foods rich in vitamins, mineral salts and above all omega 3 and omega 6, the so-called "essential fatty acids", precursors of important substances that fight inflammation.

The sources of omega 3 and omega 6 are mainly fish, oil seeds (sunflower, sesame, pumpkin and linen) and vegetable oils:

  • extra virgin olive oil,
  • Wheat germ oil,
  • cold-pressed linseed oil.

Prefer natural food based on whole grains, legumes, white meat, vegetables and seasonal fruit and avoid pro-inflammatory foods such as white sugar, sugary drinks, desserts, milk and dairy products, yogurt, red meat and cold cuts .

Herbal remedies for neuralgia

The plants used to relieve pain caused by neuralgia have a natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic action that acts directly on nerves and nerve endings.

  • Spirea : ( Spirea ulmaria ), the flowers and flowering tops play an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic action, because they inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins (PGE2), responsible for the pain and inflammation of the tissues. It therefore comes to alleviate painful states caused by neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis, joint pains.
  • Willow : ( Salix alba ), the bark is used for its antineuralgic, analgesic, antipyretic and antirheumatic properties, useful in case of rheumatism; joint and muscle pain, back pain; neuralgia.
  • Elderberry : ( Sambucus Nigra ), the juice extracted from its fruits has diuretic, anti-neuralgic, antirheumatic, sudoriferous anti-inflammatory effect. In popular tradition, the plant is used to detoxify the body from toxins and to combat neuralgia, especially with trigeminal disease.
  • Boswellia: ( Boswellia serrata ), the resin produced by this plant has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic action on various pathologies. Its use is recommended in the treatment of local inflammations, degenerative disorders of the joints, reduced morning motor skills, muscle pain, rheumatism, arthrosis, inflammation of soft tissues such as tendinitis, myositis and fibromyalgia and neuralgia.

The gemmoderivato of the Maple ( Acer campestre ) acts on the drainage of the degenerative organic processes, removing the toxic humoral substances. For this reason it is used for the treatment of facial and intercostal neuralgia, sciatica neuralgia and nerve inflammation caused by shingles.

Bach flowers for neuralgia

The psychosomatic component makes neuralgia a disorder that can be treated with Bach Flowers . These remedies, intervening on the emotional or character cause, which causes pain of strong intensity and limited duration, favors the healing process in a sweet and natural way.

  • Impatiens : indicated for neuralgia, cramps, stiff neck. Those who are dominated by impatience and impulsiveness suffer from it. This individual is restless, hyperactive, irritable, "nervous", does not tolerate delays, setbacks, hesitations, second thoughts, files. He cannot relax, therefore he suffers from muscular, mental and emotional tension.
  • Vervain : it is the remedy for neuralgia, fibromyalgia and muscle cramps. It suffers those who are rigid and ideologically tense, exaggeratedly sure of their vision of the world and who have intolerance towards others' opinions. This individual is characterized by exaggerated manifestations: energy, enthusiasm, excitement, effort manifested in lively eyes, tense and rigid face, nerves on the surface of the skin, inability to relax.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Much more can be done with plantar reflexology inspired by the traditional Chinese medicine map of the energy meridians, especially for trigeminal neuralgia. The areas to be treated are: the spine with the tip of the nail, all the fingers also with small tractions, starting from the tips up to the metatarsal-phalangeal joint, including the interdigital spaces.

These points can be very painful so start with light manipulation; treat in tonification all the muscoltaura and the spleen, to insist a lot on the second and third finger that represent the stomach.

The reflex points of the trigeminal nerve are found both dorsally (14 points) and plantar (19 + 5 points), stimulation can also be done with a tip if it is difficult and inaccurate with the nail.

Aromatherapy for neuralgia

Essential oils with anti-inflammatory and analgesic action on nerve tissues are useful for treating neuralgia. They are used in external use, conveyed by a vegetable oil or a neutral cream (3-5 drops) and gently massaged on the affected part until completely absorbed. Repeat a couple of times a day until the neuralgia has subsided or disappeared.

  • Essential oil of cajepu t : it has an anti-inflammatory action, useful in the symptomatic treatment of gout, headache, joint pain, arthritis and neuralgia.
  • Essential oil of camphor : for the analgesic and anti-inflammatory action, it helps to alleviate sprains, bruises, pain and muscle sprains, neuralgia.
  • Clove essential oil : anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity is used to relieve headaches, neuralgia and toothache.
  • Celery essential oil: it has an analgesic and n-inflammatory action, indicated for neuralgia and to relieve rheumatic pains.

Homeopathy

We always remember that the homeopathic doctor will know how to act according to the psychological component that can be found in the disorder. The homeopathic remedies most often administered in the case of neuralgia are:

Magnesia phosphorica 7 CH and Magnesia carbonica 7 CH ; Kalmia latifolia 7 CH : (for excruciating pains followed by sensations of strange sensitivity); Spigelia anthelmia 7 CH ; Colocynthis 7 CH . But we obviously remember that the remedies vary depending on the type of pain, how acute it is, under what circumstances it calms down.

Exercises

Among the various forms of neuralgic pain we find, in addition to that which affects the trigeminal nerve, the pathology that concerns the large ischial nerve (in practice, sciatica ), or the neuralgia of the nerves of the arm or intercostal nerves.

Once the nature of the disorder is clarified after medical evaluation (it is very important to understand if there is a vertebral crushing) it is possible to proceed with an adequate physical therapy . Treatments can be performed by the physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor.

These include vertebral tractions, massages that tone and relax the back muscles and beyond. Sometimes it proceeds through analgesic currents that involve the application of electrodes along the sciatic nerve path and then there flow soft electric currents, which exert a pain-relieving and trophic effect on the nerve.

The inflammation must be followed and treated through a targeted postural re-education that allows to improve the coordination and tone of the muscles of the back and beyond. Pilates, the method of Mézières or the Souchard method (global postural re-education) are methods that can restore harmony in the posture, tone and strengthen the muscles.

In general, a sedentary lifestyle increases the inflammatory process, and the same is true in the case of a diet that too acidifies the blood.
