Ingrown hairs: the top 5 remedies

The ingrown hairs affect legs, groin, arms and are generally caused by hair removal; in predisposed people, hair growing under the skin can cause folliculitis, with the formation of cysts and dark spots.

To prevent the growth of hair on the skin it is necessary to carefully choose the most suitable hair removal method and try to soften and exfoliate the skin: we see the five most effective remedies against ingrown hairs.

1. The exfoliating glove

The exfoliating glove or the loofah - a natural sponge obtained by drying the pumpkins of the plant of the same name - are excellent for eliminating dead skin cells and freeing trapped hairs under the skin .

To promote the elimination of unwanted hair, it is advisable to use the exfoliating glove or the loofah just before shaving: both are used in the shower, massaging the areas of the skin to be waxed, 12 to 24 hours before waxing.

2. The DIY scrub

The DIY scrub is an economic solution to prevent the appearance of ingrown hairs for a dual action: it is exfoliating and emollient.

The DIY scrub is prepared by mixing simple ingredients such as coarse salt and vegetable oil, to which you add essential oils that perfume the preparation and have an antibacterial action, useful for preventing the formation of pimples caused by ingrown hairs.

The scrub is applied to wet skin in the shower massaging with circular movements, not more than once a week.

3. Hair removal

To prevent the formation of ingrown hairs it is important to shave properly: electric epilators and razors are often the cause of the growth of hairs under the skin.

If you want to prevent ingrown hair, it is better to opt for waxing, perhaps prepared at home with natural ingredients such as sugar and lemon juice.

Waxing with sugar and lemon - or Arab waxing - is also suitable for delicate skin, but if you suffer from fragile capillaries, or if you have very reactive skin, you should consider other methods of hair removal.

Among these, pulsed light and laser seem to work, two definitive depilation methods effective on dark hair.

Permanent hair removal has a fairly high cost but is a perfect solution if for example you suffer from ingrown hairs that cause folliculitis.

4. Moisturize and soften the skin

To prevent hair from growing under the skin it is advisable to moisturize the skin with care both after depilation and in the following days.

Once or twice a day, massage a moisturizing and emollient product suitable for your skin type, insisting on areas where ingrown hairs appear most often.

5. Do it yourself oil against folliculitis

Hairs that grow under the skin can cause inflammation of the follicle with consequent formation of pimples or cysts that are difficult to eliminate and that can leave unsightly dark spots.

To prevent this phenomenon called folliculitis, you can prepare an oil to be massaged on the skin, both after waxing and in the days after hair removal.
