What is depression
Depression usually means a condition of profound sadness which, in the most serious forms, takes on the characteristics of a psychotic disorder . The soul suffers, afflicted by a feeling of inadequacy and mistrust due to a series of individual, family and social reasons.
But the body also suffers . On a physiological level, depression could derive from an altered balance of the actions of certain neuromediators on the receptors and of these in the translation of the message. In particular, the systems of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, substances involved in the regulation of pleasure, research and novelty, would be involved.
The causes of the depressive state are many and diverse. Among the most common, there are certainly external factors (dismissal, separation, divorce, mourning), hereditary elements (genetic disposition to depression) and diseases or physical disorders (anemia, hormonal disorders, immobility, vitamin deficiencies, poor thyroid activity ), without forgetting the known postpartum depression. What can meditation against depression do?
Meditation against depression
The denial of depression only worsens the intensity of the disorder, while accepting this condition as a fact is the first step to finding oneself and starting to live. This is already a first step.
Another step can be represented by practicing a form of meditation against depression or, better, dysthymia, which presents symptoms similar to depression, but less serious in intensity and more persistent over time. In general, movement or activity increases self-esteem and helps fight negative moods. Therefore, there are not only drugs and psychotherapy.
What form of meditation to adopt? Buddhist meditation lends itself well to fighting depression, because it helps to better manage recurring thoughts and above all positive ones. Breathing, the basic modality of meditation, allows benefits on the central nervous system. Numerous studies bear witness to the benefits of meditation against anxiety, stress and depression.
