Perfuming the house in an ecological way is simple, cheap and fun. Why resort to synthetic fragrances with unnatural scents when you can do it yourself with just a few ingredients?
The essential ingredient for a naturally fragrant home are the essential oils: let's discover them together.
How to choose essential oils to perfume the home
Before creating natural perfumers, let's see how to choose and combine essential oils together . In addition to each having their own aromatherapy properties, the fragrances are divided into top notes, base notes and heart notes .
To obtain an optimal result from the olfactory point of view it is good to mix a top note, a basic note and a heart note. Furthermore, if we want to use aromatherapy fragrances, we need to know the properties.
Top notes include the essential oils of eucalyptus, lemon, basil, mandarin, orange, bergamot, citronella, mint, sage, rosemary, tea tree oil, niaouli. These essential oils have a stimulating, antiseptic and balsamic action, so they are useful in case of problems with the respiratory tract but also if we need to maintain concentration for study or work.
Among the base notes there are the essential oils with a more persistent perfume such as benzoin, cedar, incense, sandalwood, patchouli and myrrh; these oils have a relaxing action and are therefore useful if we want to create an environment suitable for meditation.
Among the heart notes we find lavender, geranium, chamomile, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, lemon balm, which have an emotional balancing action, thus favoring relationships but also sleep.
Perfume the rooms with essential oils
This method is certainly the most simple and affordable for everyone. In fact, it takes just one burner, water and at least one essential oil: fill the burner essence with water, add 10 drops of essential oil of your choice and light the candle. In a few minutes your home will be filled with an intense and natural fragrance.
You can also mix more than one essential oil (up to three) and create customized fragrances.

Scented chalks for linen
The prissumed chalks can be used to perfume cabinets and drawers but also lend themselves as placeholders, party favors or small gifts for guests.
To do it yourself you need:
- A part of ceramic plaster (a glass)
- Two glasses of water
- 20 drops of essential oil of your choice
- Silicone molds
- Dye
First you need to grease the silicone mold with a little oil . Then add 20 drops of essential oil to a glass of chalk and add two glasses of water in which the dye has previously been added. Mix well to remove all the lumps and pour into the mold.
The plaster dries completely in twenty-four hours and after five hours the chalks can be removed from the mold.
If they had irregular edges, they can be finished with a little sandpaper when the chalks are completely dry.
To color the chalks you can use both cosmetic mineral oxides and liquid food dyes, easily available at the supermarket.
The essential oil most indicated for linen-perfume chalks is lavender essential oil thanks to its mothproofing action .
Scented sticks
Scented sticks are even easier to prepare. The necessary ingredients are:
- 100 ml of food alcohol
- 90 drops of essential oils of your choice
- About ten wooden sticks
- A glass bottle
Fill the bottle with alcohol, add essential oils, shake slightly and place the sticks in the bottle.
The choice of essential oils depends on personal taste: the advice is to choose at least three essential oils of which a top note, a base note and a heart note, inserting to a greater extent what you want to prevail.
If after a few days the perfume is less intense, add a few drops of essential oil to the alcohol.

DIY incense
For incenses you need a little more manual skills but the result will satisfy you. First, get yourself:
- 100 g of combustible charcoal
- 100 g of benzoin or myrrh resin
- 50 g of dried herbs or spices
- 1 teaspoon of Arabica gum
- 10 g of essential oils
- Bamboo sticks
Grind the herbs, charcoal and resin in a mortar until a fine powder is obtained. Add the gum arabic and the essential oil.
Add distilled water slowly and mix very well until a malleable mixture is obtained. Place everything on a rectangle of parchment paper and roll the bamboo sticks on the mixture, covering them well; take care not to impregnate the end of the stick so that it can be inserted into the incense holder.
At this point let the sticks dry for a week so that they dry well before using them.
