What do you really know about meditation?



When we approach topics that come from other cultures, we often hear "clichés" that make us smile. Today I will try to debunk some "Myths and Legends", related to Meditation, since these questions have, in most cases, a general interest, and also allow me to debunk some of the rumors and beliefs related to the subject.

What do you know about it?

Here are the most popular ones: 1. To meditate, should I sit on the floor in silence cross-legged ?

NO, you don't have to do it. Especially since many of us are not used to sitting on the floor and our knees would hurt in no time. So why suffer? Initially we can sit on a chair, on a mat or in a car when we are in the queue, the main thing is to keep your back straight, because this facilitates breathing, the natural flow of energy and our Chakras . 2. Is meditation only reserved for monks, for those who practice oriental disciplines or for special people? NO, it's for everyone . Meditation is a good practice that can improve anyone's life. 3. Do you have to dress differently than usual? NO, you can dress as you always dress, as long as they are comfortable and soft clothes, that don't bother you, (a suit jacket and tie may not be very suitable, but it depends on how you usually dress). 4. Does it take years of practice to get benefits ? NO, the benefit is immediate from day one. As you go on, you will learn the techniques better and then a few minutes a day will be enough to feel good. 5. Do you need to go to a temple to meditate? NO, also because there are no temples anywhere and unless you have a bricklayer always available to build one, it would be really inconvenient. 6. Do you need a lot of free time to meditate? NO, initially a few minutes will be enough, when you want. It will be enough to carve out a moment of pause! 7. Should we have a spiritual figure of reference? NO. Many types of meditation are available, techniques, video guides. Once you are familiar with one of them, everything will be much easier. Indeed, this is the fundamental thing. 8. Do I betray my religion ? Absolutely no. Meditation is not tied to religion but rather to one's inner life. 9. Do we have to be suffering to meditate or, on the contrary, is it only for happy people ? NONE of the two things. One meditates to get in touch with oneself, to listen to oneself and simply to free one's mind. Well, having clarified these little doubts, it must be said that there are two types of meditation : concentration meditation and mindfulness meditation.

Both serve to observe what happens inside of oneself, where the thoughts, the reactions of the body and the emotions that are generated go. Each of us has experienced in his life the experience of having "energy in a thousand" (adrenaline) or "anger flowing in rivers". In both cases, they are very strong emotions that move in our body and that through meditation we can learn to recognize and manage through simple practical exercises, breathing and meditation to relax the body and mind, to improve our concentration in life and in work, but also to sleep better and control states of insomnia or hypersomnia.
