The Swedish basic massage: its history and the benefits it offers

Today the Swedish basic massage is the first massage technique that is taught to those who want to become a professional masseur because their maneuvers are then found in all other massage techniques.

It is a classic Western massage that in Europe represents the traditional standard massage, a name that distinguishes it especially in English-speaking countries, in the Netherlands and in Hungary. In the other states, including Sweden, we refer instead to this massage with the name of classic massage .

The name of the Swedish base massage comes from its creator, the Swedish physician and physiotherapist Pehr Henrik Linf (1776-1839) who first systematized the massage techniques within a method defining indications, contraindications and dexterity.

Ling himself is also the founder of the Ling Institute of Modern Gymnastics, whose students spread massage techniques throughout Europe developing the manual skills of the classic Swedish massage still used today. It is a complete massage that is performed on the whole body even if, given the freedom of the maneuvers and the non-rigid sequences, it can also be performed on individual muscle areas.

The benefits of Swedish base massage

Today the Swedish base massage is used above all for its relaxing, relaxing, invigorating and draining effect. Furthermore, due to its action on the hemolymphatic circulation it is also useful in the prevention of cellulite. It is done with the help of massage oil and lying on the couch.

Among the main benefits that the Swedish basic massage can bring we have:

> Healthier and brighter skin : a massage improves the skin in terms of brightness and beauty thanks to the elimination of dead cells and pore stimulation.

> Relaxation: every type of massage allows the person to enter a state of relaxation, it is enough to know the maneuvers to be performed and the points to be treated

> Loosening of muscular tension: massaging muscles loosens tensions and muscle contractions improving athletic performance

> Lymphatic stimulation: during the treatment there is a movement of liquids which leads to the elimination of the waste that accumulates in the body. The result is an improvement in the immune system and a regenerating effect that can counteract inflammation and edema.

The techniques of Swedish base massage

As you will learn in our massage courses there are four main movements of the massage and it is traditionally distinguished between:

- Touch: a light and relaxing maneuver that can be carried out in depth to drain blood and lymph

- Friction: an anomalous tissue squeezing maneuver (fat and cellulite)

- Deep kneading: a twisting maneuver and squeezing of the muscle

- Percussion: small maneuvers to stimulate muscle and skin It is therefore a complete massage and the basis from which the aspiring professional masseur must begin his studies, before moving on to more complex massage techniques.
