Metamorphic massage: technique, benefits and contraindications

The metamorphic massage is useful to unblock parts of oneself, untie knots and develop one's own personality. Let's find out better.

What is metamorphic massage?

Metamorphic massage or metamorphic technique was created and developed in England in the 1950s by the English naturopath and reflexologist Robert St. John (1914-1996). He was practicing the reflexology that emerged in him the intuition of the "Prenatal Therapy", a name with which he initially defined his work.

His revolutionary discovery was that the gestation of the human being - the prenatal period - the time in which, in addition to developing the physical body, we also lay the foundations of all our other on the reflection of the spine in the foot is 'inscribed'. aspects: the mental, the emotional, the spiritual, our psychological characteristics, character and behavior.

Working with a light touch on the foot in the area relative to the gestation (the reflection of the spine), tensions and difficulties experienced in the prenatal period are released, allowing the life force to flow smoothly. The work of Robert St.John was greatly contributed by his student and collaborator Gaston Saint-Pierre (1940- 2011), who gave form to the 'Metamorphic Technique', a method by which one becomes aware of the execution of the practice and of the fundamental principles underlying it.

The spread of this method also began in Italy through the initiative of Clara Erede, a student and collaborator of Robert St. John, with the organization of courses and with invitations to hold seminars both in St. John and in St. Pierre, since the early 1980s.

How does it work?

We speak of 'metamorphosis' because the process is like that which is observed everywhere in nature: from the transformation of the caterpillar into a butterfly, to the acorn, which becomes a robust oak, to the union of the egg and the sperm that gives rise to the formation of a new human being.

The function of the therapist in this work is to act as a catalyst, that is, a present but detached entity. The life force of the patient, guided by the innate intelligence of the body's cells, will move in the right direction.

This work consists simply in a light touch by performing light touches upwards and downwards on the reflection of the spine in the foot, as well as on the feet also on the hands and on the head, thus touching those three 'extreme' parts of the body which are recognized as centers of human primary functions: movement, action and thought.

The duration of the "massage" is about an hour; the technique can be applied once a week or every two weeks; 10 minutes for children.

The results are not predictable, but the experience of many years has shown that undoubtedly something happens in the person, at more or less conscious levels. You may sometimes see an unexpected healing, or even simply changes in the mental attitude or in the more external aspects of the person with respect to his choices and his environment. It has also been noted that the capacity for orientation in their life choices increases in patients.

What ailments cure

This discipline certainly does not want to be considered a panacea, but it is true that it has proved effective, and not rarely resolutive, in various types of pathologies, including handicaps .

In the case of children with delayed development it has had effects not easily attainable by the interventions of official medicine, especially if the children are taken at an early age, when the problem has not yet had time to have a profound effect.

It is an excellent method to regulate behavioral disorders, such as aggression, hyperactivity, CNS, autism, ADD and others. Each part touched and touched represents an important factor: the feet are the movement, support and inner balance; the hands are the action, the ability to communicate, to realize, to interact; finally the head is thought, a source of ideas and spirituality.

For whom is the metamorphic massage designed?

The metamorphic technique is suitable for everyone, it can also be applied to oneself.

The healing power lies in the vital energy of the recipient itself, which is both the innate intelligence of the organism and the ability to regenerate itself. In particular it is suitable for helping adults and children, people with disabilities, pregnant women. In essence, the metamorphic massage is designed for all those people who feel inside themselves unconscious blocks, which they cannot understand and which they want to solve.

They are knots that often prevent the development of one's own personality and negatively affect the dynamics of everyday life. This technique is often used by people who are facing difficult moments in their lives, such as job loss or job change, transfer, separation, illness or others related to a transition.

Often these blocks are reflected in practical life and physical illnesses, disturbances in mental and emotional balance, stress and behavioral discomfort develop.

The law in Italy and abroad

The metamorphic massage is one of the massotherapeutic practices, which can be practiced in well-being centers, spas, accredited spas. In Italy there is always a lot of confusion about the law to protect unconventional therapies and disciplines.

In 1928, through a Royal Decree (RD 31.05.1928, n. 1334, Art. 1), the figure of the Masseur and Capo Bagnino (MCB) of the hydrotherapy establishments was established. The massage therapist, as a denomination, is a relatively recent figure, who came after many others, as a masseur, masseur and lifeguard, physiokinesiterapist, massophysiotherapist, rehabilitation therapist.

Once the old professional figures established through legislative acts of the State have been abrogated or fallen into disuse, the regions - to which professional training is delegated, with the exception of that relating to the health professions - have variously legislated on the subject, but in general have limited the activity of massage to the aesthetic and wellness field.

The metamorphic massage has spread in the Anglo-Saxon environment, therefore in the European continent and finally in America and Australia.

Associations and reference bodies

As seen, the metamorphic massage can be practiced at institutes or centers specializing in massage therapy. In Italy there are various bodies and associations that protect the profession of massage therapist, such as AIM (Italian Massage Therapists Association) which lists the accredited schools and many other useful information.

The various regional schools of massage therapy often also offer metamorphic massage courses. There is the 'Metamorphic Association', founded by the same inventor, which from London continues its work of distribution throughout the world.
