European Week for Waste Reduction 2015

From November 21 to 29 the seventh edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction is held .

The event is sponsored as always by the European Parliament, born some time ago within the LIFE + Program with the aim of raising awareness about waste reduction, and will have in the current year as the theme of " dematerialization ", that is how to "do more with less".

This was announced by the national organizing committee (CNI Unesco as permanent guest, Ministry of the Environment and protection of the territory and the sea, Utilitalia (formerly Federambiente), ANCI, Metropolitan city of Turin, Metropolitan city of Roma Capitale, Legambiente, AICA, ERICA Soc. Coop., Eco delle città).

SERR rhymes with ecology, happy degrowth, sharing, respect for the world and its inhabitants. Let's find out what's in store for the current year.

Dematerialize, zero materials

Also for 2015, the objective will be to involve as much as possible public administrations, non-profit associations and organizations, schools, universities, companies, trade associations and individual citizens to propose actions aimed at preventing or reducing waste at national and local level . Italy, for four years, has been in pole position in the actions to be put into practice to reduce waste.

"Dematerialize", as the word itself says, means eliminating or at least reducing the use of materials . To perform a function, a task, to deliver a service it is not always necessary to use paper, cardboard, plastic or other.

A clear example can be the digitization of cards or documents, the computerization of processes such as the purchase of electronic tickets or the payment of bills and online users .

Another striking example is " sharing ", ie sharing: book sharing, car sharing, home sharing. Sharing means saving, not just saving money, but saving paper, fuel or even bricks !

There will be a lot of insistence on the elimination of useless packaging, on the sale of loose products, fruit, vegetables, bread and detergents.

How to do more with less

The actions implemented in the SERR address the "3 Rs": Reduce, Reuse, Recycle . The "3 Rs" represent the options that must be considered before developing a waste management strategy.

An interesting collection of cards on specific activities related to "doing more with less" was developed on the European SERR website.

These cards are intended to help implement and organize these activities. In addition to providing general information on the activity, the cards contain practical suggestions on how to prepare and implement the action, as well as a collection of examples that include various activities and initiatives, including: ecodesign laboratory, creation of a sharing network which aims to develop a shared economy, campaign on dematerialized gifts, waste reduction laboratory, repair workshop, flea market, barter and swap party, creative reuse .

In every Italian region, many towns and cities have interesting initiatives in store, the invitation is to discover it on the municipal site of each one.
