Vetiver essential oil: properties, use and contraindications



Vetiver essential oil is derived from Vetiveria zizanoides, a plant of the Poaceae family. Known for its numerous properties, it is immunostimulant and antirheumatic, useful also in cases of asthenia and anemia. Let's find out better.

Properties and benefits of Vetiver essential oil

Tonic in case of mental exhaustion, weakness, asthenia with forms of anemia. The Vetiver calms and infuses strength, security. Restores in case of stress and hyperactivity, supports concentration.

Glandular and circulatory stimulant, indicated in the case of premenstrual syndrome with abdominal tensions, irregular menstruation, carries out an emmenagogue action.

Antirheumatic and antispasmodic, it relieves muscle and arthrosic pain, stimulates arterial and venous circulation.

Antiseptic, it has a purifying action on the skin. In particular it counteracts the excess of sebum, rebalances the oily skin and cleans it of impurities in case of acne tendency.

Immunostimulant, it stimulates the production of white blood cells, strengthens the immune system, supports the weak body subject to easily falling ill.

Description of the plant

Perennial herbaceous plant that grows in tall tufts that can reach 2 meters in height. The leaves are narrow and long and is characterized by a dense weave of white or reddish roots. It is native to South India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia. It is cultivated in Haiti, in the Philippines, in Brazil.

Use and practical advice on Vetiver essential oil

The essential oil of Vetiver is indicated in case of tiredness, exhaustion, muscular and rheumatic pains, digestive problems, amenorrhea, oily skin.

Cleansing : 2 drops of Vetiver essential oil in the soap for daily body cleansing. Added to the shampoo it counteracts excess sebum from the scalp.

Skin tonic : 2 drops of oe in a water-alcohol solution to be used after face cleansing, to disinfect the skin and rebalance it.

For massage : 2 drops of essential oil to be mixed with an arnica ointment to be applied to soothe joint and muscle pain. Alternatively 3 drops of Vetiver to add to a tablespoon of Sesame oil to be massaged on the painful areas, or on the abdomen to facilitate digestion.

Contraindications of the essential oil of vetiver

Not recommended for use in pregnancy and children. To be taken only externally

Background

The roots of Vetiver are an ancient remedy used in the Ayurvedic tradition: to relieve headaches and lower fever. In the East the roots were used for the creation of baskets and mats and then sprinkled with water so that on days of great heat they gave off the aroma of Vetiver, with insect-repellent properties.
