June 21st World Yoga Day

The origin of Yoga Day

Yoga is an ancient discipline of Indian origin, a "gift of tradition" as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself said in a speech in 2014, during which he invited the United Nations to adopt and celebrate this special day, " not these are exercises, but to discover the sense of uniqueness of oneself, of the world and of swim, changing our lifestyle and creating awareness ".

It is in fact a practice both physical and spiritual oriented to the well-being of those who practice it. The word " yoga " itself means "union", symbolizing the union of body and consciousness .

Today it is practiced in various parts of the world and its popularity is constantly growing.

Recognizing effectively its universal value, on 11 December 2014 the United Nations decided to proclaim June 21st International Day of Yoga, a non-random day, but from the point of view of yoga it is called Dakshinayana, ie the passage to the second part of the year, and which coincides with the summer solstice; a special day, therefore, that wants to increase and bring to everyone the awareness about the great and numerous benefits that the practice of yoga brings.

Theme of Yoga Day 2017

The theme for the celebration of the 2017 Yoga Day, International Yoga Day, organized by the Permanent Mission of India for the United Nations is "Yoga for Health", yoga for health.

The theme of the year emphasizes the fact that yoga can contribute holistically to achieving balance between mind and body .

The organizers believe that this approach to health and well-being can lead to a direct and useful contribution for the whole humanity, completing sustainable development and moving towards lifestyles in harmony with nature.
