Family day: goals for a sustainable world

On May 15, as every year, we celebrate the International Family Day which was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1993 and reflects the importance that the international community attributes to the family unit.

" On this international family day, let the goal be to pursue sustainable development by creating a favorable environment, where all members of every family age can realize their potential to contribute to the well-being of our planet ", he announced UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon .

Family Day for a more sustainable lifestyle

It is no coincidence therefore that the central theme and the core on which the message of the year 2016 is based is to promote healthy lifestyles and a sustainable future for families around the world .

This is an opportunity to promote awareness of family issues together, and to increase awareness of social, economic and demographic processes that affect them.

This, according to the official statement of the United Nations, has the power to carry it out, today more than ever, through a system of collaboration and a network of dissemination of knowledge that creates workshops, theme days, conferences, television and radio programs, articles of newspaper.

The objectives of the International Family Day

The fundamental points connected with the development of the family touch upon issues that are always on the agenda:

  • eliminate poverty and hunger
  • ensure education for all children
  • ensure well-being and health, even at the medical level
  • eliminate sexual discrimination
  • implement family policies that can help mothers and weaker members, such as children and the elderly.

The novelty in the family in Italy

In light of this day dedicated to the family and of the great novelty of 2016, it is certainly important to underline that the Chamber recently approved with 372 votes in favor and 51 against the law on civil unions which provides for the introduction of same-sex unions in Italy, but contains a second part that regulates de facto couples, both heterosexual and homosexual, for the first time at the national level . In many Italian cities, de facto couple registers already existed, but there was no national law on the matter.

New families are born and new compositions reshape society, respecting the word "love", which is the same and universally recognized for all. In this regard it is worth mentioning article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that: " The family is the natural and fundamental nucleus of society and has the right to be protected by society and the state ".
