Sore throat from reflux: how to cure it

It's easy to say a sore throat, when in reality we have one for every occasion, even one caused by stomach problems .

It is the sore throat from gastroesophageal reflux, not to be confused with a cooling illness, although some symptoms may seem the same.

It is good to always identify the real causes of the sore throat, to be able to intervene with the correct remedies. Here is how to treat reflux throat pain, for example.

Sore throat reflux: what is it?

Normally the food ingested passes through a channel (esophagus) that leads the food bolus into the stomach, where the strongly acidic environment allows the digestion of food, whose absorption takes place in the intestine.

Gastroesophageal reflux is characterized by the abnormal rise of gastric juices inside the esophagus: food and gastric juices rise from the stomach into the esophagus.

This latter organ is not provided with protection systems against hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach and therefore the irritation of the esophagus causes burning behind the sternum and pains to swallow, as well as an increase in caries (due to corrosion of the tooth enamel to work of gastric acids), retching after eating, acid eructations (particularly when we lie down immediately after eating, because the horizontal position facilitates the process of ascent of the gastric contents into the esophagus).

Gastroesophageal reflux is very common, sometimes transient, sometimes a symptom of a much more serious pathology.

The most common causes can be: obesity, diabetes mellitus, increased gastric secretion, pregnancy, smoking, alcohol, hiatal hernia.

Chronic sore throat may depend on reflux, but that's not all: discover the other causes

Sore throat reflux: how to cure it?

There are no resolutive therapies for this pathology: gastroesophageal reflux can become chronic .

This is why it is essential to " take it in time " and maintain a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

As soothing for the sore throat due to reflux, aloe vera gel will be very good, but it is certainly good to trace the causes to treat it properly.

Nutrition is the first method of treatment: spicy foods, coffee, chocolate, alcohol and super-spirits, tomatoes and citrus fruits, highly seasoned and fried foods must be avoided (for which digestion requires a greater quantity of acid) hydrochloric); spirits are to be abolished .

We prefer less elaborate foods, we drink a lot of water to dilute acids, we eat little and often, to buffer the excess of gastric acids.

The lifestyle can be improved, with some small tricks:

  • Lose weight if you are overweight and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Do regular but not too intense physical activity, particularly after meals.
  • Avoid wearing belts and tight clothing at the waist .
  • Do not eat large meals and eat slowly.
  • Stop smoking .
  • Do not lie down or lie down after eating: wait at least two hours.
  • Sleep with your head and upper body a little higher than your body
  • Let's take the beautiful habit of walking at the end of a meal : walking facilitates the digestion process and avoids uncomfortable and contracted positions that can increase reflux.

With regards to drugs, it is necessary to contact your doctor, who will first have to determine if you are dealing with a passing phenomenon, which can only be corrected with a better lifestyle, or if it is a chronic condition that requires a real pharmacological treatment .

In the second case, the most commonly used drugs are the so-called proton pump inhibitors that block the secretion mechanism of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Other complementary aids include: drugs that facilitate the emptying of the stomach (prokinetics), drugs that protect the mucous membranes (magaldrati).

Consult your doctor in the presence of alarm symptoms : digestive hemorrhage, chest pain or respiratory disorders, nocturnal disorders, unjustified weight loss.
