Ayurveda and West meet

Often on this site we talked about Ayurvedic medicine and tradition and the web is full of tips that take inspiration from this ancient medical science.

Today we have the extraordinary opportunity to be able to refer to a professional in the field, Fabio Basalisco, a specialist in neurology as well as an Ayurvedic doctor : with extreme kindness, he was available to answer our questions, giving us his point of view on Indian medicine and the relationship that it can intertwine with traditional medicine .

As a Western doctor, he can offer us a privileged look at Ayurvedic medicine, thanks to his expertise on both fronts. Why did you decide to combine Indian medicine with your traditional preparation? What do you think are its potential?

I specialized in neurology in 1994, but already from the previous year, disappointed and unenthusiastic about Western medicine, I approached the so-called complementary medicines, starting my path of research and awareness with chromotherapy, passing through flower therapy, l homotoxicology and various other disciplines.

I crossed the Ayurveda towards the end of 1994 following an Ayurvedic massage course. Through touch, something unusual for a doctor, I began to feel, perceive, expand my consciousness .

Since then, I have increasingly studied Ayurvedic medicine, its principles, philosophy, psychology, diagnosis, therapy, putting aside both Western medicine and all other complementary disciplines.

Why the choice of Ayurvedic medicine? First of all because each of us resonates with energies compared to others and then because Ayurvedic medicine gives importance to the subject in its entirety, and not to the symptoms .

Ayurvedic medicine is an ultramillenary science (it is not a fad) whose main purpose is to promote and maintain the state of health through a series of habits, behaviors, actions ; health does not mean the absence of illness or a condition of well-being, but also a state of satisfaction and happiness .

Moreover, what has won me over is that, after many years of study, I really started feeling like a doctor and that I could take care of myself and others through lifestyle, nutrition, philosophy, psychology, massage, detoxification, diagnosis, pulse listening, therapy, meditation, yoga, phytotherapy.

Among his colleagues there is no unanimous consent regarding Ayurvedic medicine: it is considered an outdated medical tradition, with archaic and, in essence, non-scientific conceptual categories. What is your point of view on this?

Surely Ayurvedic medicine has seen its climax in India, which by definition is a conservative country that is sometimes rigid with patterns for us unusual Westerners.

In reality, ayurvedic medicine is not only the prerogative of India, but is a science of the universe as it is correlated with the laws of nature that are always present and eternal.

Ayurveda has a very profound scientific nature that should be discovered and analyzed with methods different from those used by Western medicine.

Do you think a "marriage" is possible, so to speak, between conventional therapies and Ayurvedic therapies? If so, in what way? Or do you consider them two roads destined to not be able to meet (for methodological reasons, of approach, of contents, etc)?

Medicine is one as well as religion; can take different forms as we humans have different forms.

It is important to share what everyone has to offer based on their awareness. In any case, Ayurveda is not incompatible with any other discipline.

Alternative medicine is gaining more and more space in the everyday life of many. How do you judge this increasing orientation towards alternative medicine?

The main reason why holistic medicine gains ground is that people are tired of not being often listened to, taken into consideration also for their experience and for what they have to say and why, no matter how difficult it is to recognize it, they would like to be helped to have answers about who is and what is the purpose of life.
