The inflamed sciatic nerve: the symptoms

When you suffer from an inflammation to the sciatic nerve the pain you feel can invest more points along this extensive line.

Let's find out the symptoms of this disorder.

Symptoms of sciatic nerve inflammation

The symptoms can be very variable depending on whether there is a herniated disc and other pain localized at the lumbar level, for example.

What makes the difference is the nerve root involved and, in the case of a hernia, obviously the amount of compression that is exercised. The combination of these pains is called sciatica as a whole or better said sciatica .

Certainly the prime synod is the lumbar pain connected to a certain discomfort along the whole lower limb, often up to the big toe. A series of disorders can be connected such as tingling, burning sensation, painful pulse, extreme sensitivity at the level of the nerve root. Acute pain or constant tingling may also be associated with acute burning.

Sometimes one has the feeling that the knee of the affected lower limb gives up, lose strength ; usually this is connected to a noticeable reduction in the strength of the muscles of the posterior loggia of the leg and it occurs above all in the case of strong compression at the level of the ec econd or of the third lumbar vertebra.

On the other hand, when the compression affects the roots at the level of the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae, it is difficult to walk on the heels and to force them on due to the reduced capacity of the muscles that lift the tip of the foot and the toes.

If the complex is at the level of the first sacral, it is difficult to walk on tiptoe.

Know the sciatic nerve

It must be considered that the sciatic nerve is the longest in the human body: it starts from the spinal cord, passes through the buttocks, continues to the bottom of the lower part of the thighs and up to the legs.

It must be considered that the symptoms of sciatic nerve pain can also derive from more delicate conditions such as infections, lesions or tumor formation in the lumbar part of the spine in the most serious cases.

Then there is the so-called piriformis syndrome, a muscoletto that, going to strike on the nerve, presses it, irritates and inflames.

Another risk factor for inflammation of the sciatic nerve is pregnancy due to the additional weight of the fetus; for this reason it is so important that the woman continues to do even small exercises in soft gymnastics and breathing, which does not completely abandon small tenciche of mobility and flexibility of the spine.

In many cases, in addition to diagnostic tests, it is possible to use the typical orthopedic exam which consists in following the lifting test of the straight leg : in short, the person is made to lie down in a supine position with both legs straight, and is asked to lift the affected leg at a 45 ° angle, keeping it straight.

If the doctor, doing evidence of foot blows and asking to maintain the pain position, traces the patient's lower back or thigh pain, probably it is sciatica.
