All uses of helichrysum

The golden flower of the sun

You have been attracted by the fragrant and delicate elicriso seedling - the name derives from the Greek helios which means " sun " and chrysos " gold " - and you put it on the windowsill in the company of thyme, oregano and other aromatic herbs, but you don't know from which side to start to use it?

While waiting for the beautiful golden yellow flowers to hatch, here are some practical indications for use and cultivation .

Plant the helichrysum

If you have bought the helichrysum seedling pot, bear in mind that it needs a fairly temperate and Mediterranean climate .

If the climate is suitable, you can think of planting it in full sun and mulching the plant during the winter, to protect it from frost, being a perennial plant.

Otherwise you can keep it in a vase, always in a sunny position, a vase that is quite large and protected during the cold season, since the plant tends to grow a lot, forming bushes of 30-40 centimeters.

Expect the beautiful spring flowering to be able to use bright yellow flowers and soft light green leaves, wetting from time to time, without exaggerating, so as to avoid stagnation of water.

How to use helichrysum

Both the leaves and the flowers can be dried from the helichrysum plant or they can be found ready in herbalist's shops and specialized shops.

Generally the leaves are flavored in the kitchen, vaguely reminiscent of the taste of curry, and are used for example for risottos, meat dishes and for flavoring sauces; you can even dress pasta if you wish.

The flowers, used fresh or dried in well ventilated places, then collected at the beginning of flowering, can be used for infusions and herbal teas, for curative wraps or to make them an oleolith;

while the internal use of the plant is generally known for its antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and respiratory diseases, external uses can be useful in case of dermatosis or small wounds, generally to soothe inflamed skin.

The flowers are also used for dry compositions and original bouquets.
