Sciatalgia in pregnancy, what to do

Sciatica is inflammation of the sciatic nerve; the pain is located at the back of the thigh but can radiate upwards, affecting the gluteus and hip, and downwards, affecting the calf and sometimes the foot. It is perceived as a very intense twinge that makes walking difficult and can be very limiting.

In pregnancy , sciatica is widespread and occurs more commonly in the third trimester when the uterus, now very large, compresses the sciatic nerve and the weight of the child is felt.

The sciatica in pregnancy must above all be prevented

It is possible to prevent sciatica, as well as other problems commonly associated with pregnancy, with a correct lifestyle. Prevention is always the first of the treatments.

> Avoid excessive weight gain. Overweight favors the appearance of sciatica and other annoying problems typical of pregnancy. The weight gain should not exceed 9-12 pounds .

> Attention to posture . For example, if the expectant mother is often sitting, perhaps because she is doing office work, it is important that she get up frequently to take a few steps. It is also advisable to keep a low stool under her feet to stand with her legs slightly raised from the ground; if, on the other hand, he often stands up, he should maintain a correct posture, avoiding, that is, pushing the pelvis forward, accentuating the natural curvature of the lower part of the spine; he should also have regular breaks to sit and / or lie down .

> Avoid shoes with very high heels, but also completely flat heels, such as ballet flats. The perfect heel is 3-4 cm .

> Avoid lifting weights and making sudden movements .

> If the course of the pregnancy allows it, carry out a regular and mild physical activity: for example walking, swimming, gentle exercise and yoga.

How to deal with sciatica

If it is no longer just a question of prevention, why is sciatica already present, what can be done? The first advice is of course to talk about it with your doctor, who will be able to give all the necessary information. In general, however, to alleviate sciatica in pregnancy, it is useful:

> Dose rest and physical activity . The sciatica is a very intense and annoying pain and therefore pushes to stand still and rest; that's great, especially in times when the pain is acute, because the muscles need to be relaxed; when, however, the pain gives a little respite it is important to do a little movement, in a light but constant manner, for example swimming and walking are indicated.

> To help rest, sleep lying on your side holding a pillow between your legs. The supine position should be avoided as it can lead to excessive pressure on the spine, increasing the discomfort of sciatica.

> Hot packs and a nice hot bath can help relax the muscles and therefore relieve pain.

In some cases, the pain is so disabling that medication may be needed . The use of medicines in pregnancy is always a delicate matter that must be discussed with your gynecologist.
