What is phosphorus

Chemical symbol: P 3- , P 5+

Phosphorus in the elemental state and at room temperature is a white, translucent, highly flammable and extremely toxic mineral . When heated it turns into red phosphorus, stable and not poisonous, which oxidizes very slowly in the air.

It is the twelfth element in order of abundance on earth and, due to its high reactivity, it is never found in the free state in nature but combined with other minerals in inorganic phosphorous rocks and in all living cells ( phosphoric acid and phosphates ).

Phosphorus is an indispensable element in all energy transformations at the cellular level : in the human body it is present in the blood, in the bones, in the teeth, in the nervous tissue, in the heart, in the muscles, in the molecules of the genetic material (DNA and RNA) and in cell membranes.

Benefits and properties

Phosphorus contributes to the absorption of calcium in the intestine (the ratio is 1 phosphorus atom every 2.5 of calcium). Strengthens the regenerative power of cells and is fundamental to bone formation, energy production and body growth.

Phosphorus promotes the use of vitamins by the body and is particularly effective in the pathologies of sight, hearing and smell. Moreover, it performs a buffer function for maintaining the balance of PH in the blood.

A phosphorus deficiency can be translated into bone demineralization, developmental delay and alteration, cardiac and neurological disorders, asthma and respiratory spasms, muscular atony, nervousness, stress . An excess, on the other hand, can cause an imbalance in the assimilation of calcium.

Daily phosphorus requirement

The daily phosphorus requirement is equal to that of calcium:

  • for adults it is about 800 mg;
  • 1000 mg for the elderly;
  • 1200 mg for adolescents and for pregnant or lactating women.

The two substances must always be balanced together.

Effects of phosphorus on the psyche and the spirit

Phosphorus soothes the soul, improves memory and invigorates in the event of tiredness and depression. It mitigates anger and irritability, gives impetus to the determination of the subject and loosens the defense mechanisms by stimulating awareness, sensitivity and intuition.

Method of use

The absorption and accumulation of phosphorus is favored by calcium, vitamin A and D. According to oligotherapy, the intake of trace elements in colloidal form allows the organism to restore its balance, without deficiencies or excesses. Phosphorus has an antispasmodic and diuretic action and is used in case of osteoporosis, asthma and cerebral asthenia, often in association with Manganese-Copper, Manganese-Cobalt and Copper-Silver-Gold in spasmophilia that manifests itself in relation to gland dysfunction parathyroid glands .

In crystal therapy, minerals with a high phosphorus content, such as apatite, are put in direct contact with the body to achieve the desired results.

Curiosities and historical notes

Phosphorus (from the Greek phosphoros, "light bearer"), perhaps already known to the Arab alchemists of the century XII, it was certainly obtained for the first time in 1669 by the German chemist Henning Brand for the reduction of phosphate salts contained in urine, but only a century later Lavoisier recognized it with certainty as a chemical element. The name was later given to his properties to emit a greenish light in the darkness and to ignite spontaneously in the air.
