What is psychosomatic harmonization

Psychosomatic harmonization is a practice connected with psychosomatic disciplines, which are part of natural medicine and holistic disciplines. Dr. GW Groddeck, a pupil of Freud, was the first in the 1930s to talk about psychosomatic medicine. He was studying hysterical manifestations when he realized how hysteria was connected to somatic symptoms such as sweating, tremors and cutaneous manifestations. If it is true that our life takes place in the mind and in the body, the quality of our days depends on how we relate to ourselves and take care of both aspects. Psychosomatic harmonization provides for a first part of work on the mind and attention paid to how one relates to oneself. The mental schemes are deepened, one gets in deep contact with one's own vision of life, in an attempt to understand it, to make it evolve, to renew it. A second phase is dedicated to body work; this phase includes relaxation techniques, meditation patterns and more.

How does it work?

Psychosomatic harmonization is centered on thought, on the thought that creates, on the thought of the individual who weaves interpersonal relationships, on the observation of self and others. It works by understanding what tension is and why we sometimes become its slaves and why we produce them . It is therefore a matter of understanding and training the self, of seeing how one can enter into harmony with others and with the world, even passing through the obstacles that life puts before human beings every day. To do this, different meditative techniques are used to induce relaxation and concentration, yogic positions are used, combined with static meditation and dynamic meditation.

For whom psychosomatic harmonization is useful

Psychosomatics is a branch of medical psychology aimed at researching the connection between a somatic disorder and its etiology, often of a psychological nature, its very etymology indicates it: psyche, mind and soma, body. Its theoretical presupposition is the first consideration that man is inseparably united psychophysics; besides the somatic factors, psychological factors also play a fundamental role. The interconnection between a disorder and its cause of psychic origin is linked to the holistic vision of the human being, within the awareness that body and mind are closely linked together. Besides psychosomatic harmonization, a holistic discipline, one of the most promising addresses of psychosomatic research in the last thirty years is the psychoneuroendocrine immunology (PNEI), a strand of endocrinolgia that aims to clarify the relationships between psychological functioning, secretion of neurotransmitters and hormones and immune system functioning.

Psychosomatic harmonization in the pediatric field

Psychosomatic harmonization can be useful in pediatric settings, to meet the child with psychosomatic disorders. Psychosomatic disorders are symptoms unknowingly produced by the child and without any organic alteration. The children who suffer from these psychosomatic disorders are numerous and represent a good percentage of subjects visited by the pediatrician. The smaller the child, the more psychosomatic is the way of expression used ; the psychosomatic clinic deals with organic disorders whose genesis and evolution see the prevalent participation of psychological aspects. The child is he who can one day choose the somatic way to express his psychological or physical discomfort, linked for example to being abandoned or being in a situation of conflict or negative for him. Disorders can affect all organs and are different, both as an entity and according to the age of the child. The most frequent clinical manifestations can be vomiting, rejection of food, colic, diarrhea, constipation, eczema, insomnia, asthma, obesity, cough or headache . And yet, as he grows up, other eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia take over . The thing that can be confusing is that, when a symptom manifests itself, the disorder that is born is misleading compared to the real cause that triggered it: the organ object of the disease is an organ on which the child unconsciously unloads a disorder of another kind. Then the difficulty lies precisely in going to find out what are the causes that gave way to the whole. The professional, psychologist, pediatrician, expert in psychosomatic harmonization, who has him in charge, must go back to the true origin of the discomfort to be able to make a correct diagnosis and, subsequently, give an effective therapy.

The law in Italy and abroad

To become a psychosomatologist, you must specialize by attending a special course of study. In Italy, the SIMP, Italian Somatology Society, constitutes the reference point for psychosomatic medicine. Established in 1966, it has carried out an intense clinical research and training activity for healthcare professionals, in collaboration with university clinics, hospitals, professional orders, national and foreign scientific societies, proposing to stimulate the strengthening of the value that interdisciplinary links, dialogue and comparison between scientific and personal fields, even different ones, represent in a profitable exchange and integration perspective. Abroad, psychosomatic medicine is now experiencing a season of interest, so much so that it was designated in 2003 as the seventh psychiatric specialization by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Associations and reference bodies

In Italy psychosomatic harmonization is a practice that is arousing some interest, but still little known. A point of reference in addition to the aforementioned SIMP is also the AIRP (Italian Association for the Study and Psychosomatic Research) of Livorno. There are also several schools and associations that organize psychosomatic harmonization seminars. Many yoga centers offer a fusion between bodily practice and naturopathic disciplines through targeted lectures and courses.
