The laryngitis of the dog and the cat is a very common disorder, especially in winter, when it can happen that the dog and the cat take a cold shot such as to cause a discomfort in the throat. Natural remedies in these cases come to the rescue. Let's find out how.
What is dog and cat laryngitis
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx . The larynx is responsible for the emission of sounds because it contains the vocal cords inside.
Symptoms of laryngitis in dogs and cats
The symptoms of laryngitis are easily recognizable:
- bark or hoarse, weak meow,
- dry and irritated cough,
- difficulty swallowing,
- swelling and acute throat pain.
Sometimes fever also appears . In the presence of laryngitis a dog or cat has difficulty swallowing or has showy and frequent swallowing: the animal approaches food and water with desire, but renounces the first bite or the first gulp or drinks with excessive frequency or fa swallowing marked and "empty".
In some cases the dog or cat shows a strong reaction by touching the chinstrap and coughing at the slightest stimulus . By opening the jaws (not all, however, they are collaborative) we see the reddened throat, with or without plaques, sometimes excoriated, the tonsils more or less inflamed or infected.
Laryngitis of the dog: cures and natural remedies
Laryngitis, which is inflammation of the larynx, is a problem more common to dogs than cats . The dog may be affected by laryngitis after excessive and prolonged barking (for example if he does not like to be left alone at home) or a cold shot.
If the disorder is occasional and does not originate from the cold, natural remedies can be used. To prevent laryngitis in winter you can give the dog the glycerine macerate of Rosa canina : from 10 to 40 drops depending on the size, once a day for 20 days a month. The drops can also be put in the food, but it is better to give them directly in the mouth diluted in a little water. Dog rose has anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant properties .
To treat laryngitis already in progress, the following phytotherapeutic preparations can be used:
- Propolis: to mitigate the pain administer a teaspoon (or teaspoon) of honey in which propolis was dissolved purified for internal use (3 drops per teaspoon) several times a day. Propolis has an emollient, calming and disinfectant action.
- Erisimo: it is useful in the presence of aphonia to recover the "voice". Prepare a decoction, filter and leave to cool. Since it is not very pleasing to the dog, it can be given in small quantities, teaspoons or with a syringe without needle, several times a day.
Cat laryngitis: cures and natural remedies
For the cat the main cause of laryngitis is the cold and to prevent it, especially in winter, the cat can be given the glycerine macerate of Rosa canina which has anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant properties: from 10-15 drops, once a day for 20 days a month. The drops can also be put in the food, but it is better to give them directly in the mouth diluted in a little water.
If the laryngitis is already underway, instead, it is possible to use phytotherapy preparations based on propolis, to mitigate the pain (a teaspoon or a teaspoon of honey in which 3 drops of propolis have been dissolved purified for internal use, several times per day).
Even a decoction with an erysium can be useful to recover the "voice" in case of aphonia. Since the decoction is not very welcome, it can be given to the cat with teaspoons or with a syringe without needle, in small quantities, several times a day.
