What the dietitian does

Being a dietitian is a technical-health profession: it organizes and coordinates specific activities related to nutrition in general and dietetics in particular; collaborates with the bodies in charge of protecting the hygiene and health aspects of the food service.

The dietician elaborates, formulates and implements the diets prescribed by the doctor and checks the patient's acceptability; collaborates with other figures in the multidisciplinary treatment of eating disorders ; it studies and elaborates the composition of food rations able to satisfy the nutritional needs of population groups and plans the organization of the feeding services of healthy and sick communities.

Furthermore, it carries out educational, educational and information activities aimed at spreading food principles that allow the recovery and maintenance of a good state of health of the individual, of the community and of population groups.

Become a dietitian

To become a dietitian a three-year degree in Dietetics is required at the Faculty of Medicine.

The profession of dietitian in Italy and abroad

In Italy there are three main professional categories that deal with food:

  • dietician (a medical specialist in nutrition, is the most complete professional figure)
  • dietitian (food technician, subordinate to the doctor regarding diagnosis and treatment)
  • nutritionist (a professional recognized by the State, he deals with consulting and information)

In Anglophone countries and in some European countries, on the other hand, the terminology is only two macro categories (for more details see dietitian):

  • dietitian (specialist in nutrition)
  • dietetic technicians
  • nutritionist (professional without training and regulatory credentials)
