Depression, homeopathic natural remedies

By Dr. Francesco Candeloro

Depression is an affective disorder characterized by a reduction in mood, which affects about 10% of the population. Let's find homeopathic remedies to cure it.

Causes and symptoms of depression

Numerous pathologies, even organic ones, can be associated to conditions of lowering of mood, although nowadays this term is mostly used to designate a mood of the person, which appears to be free or almost from any other suffering (endogenous depression).

In fact, depression can also be secondary to contingent circumstances such as serious loss or loss, sentimental unpleasantness or any other kind, excessive workload or study, etc. these are the pictures that form reactive forms, which often tend to resolve spontaneously, but which over time can instead reveal, or rather to de-emphasize, a state of mind to which the organism appears constitutionally susceptible.

In all cases, however, both in the reactive forms, that is, and in those apparently not linked to particular triggers, a condition of suffering and moral pain derives from the following : sadness, pessimism, slowing down of conception and 'motor activity, devaluation of the person, loss of interests, difficulty in carrying out the usual activities, tendency to tears and at least an initial state of anxiety and agitation. Of course, there is no lack of physical ailments mainly related to the digestive sphere, while the association with insomnia is frequent .

In the most serious forms of depression, defined as major depression, the psychic and motor slowing is remarkable, to the point of melancholy stupor and mutacism, while the forms associated with prevailing restlessness and agitation are rarer, and which shape the picture of dysphoria .

Drug therapy has used for some years as first choice drugs substances that inhibit the recovery of serotonin (SSRI) in areas of the CNS where it is present: this means increasing the quantity of this substance in this location, so as to improve, thanks to its action, the state of psychophysical well-being associated with it.

In the forms in which the anxious component is important, the common benzodiazepines are added, together with an adequate supporting psychotherapy.

Homeopathic remedies against depression

The advantage of homeopathic treatments, compared to traditional ones, consists in being able to deal with the different pictures of depression with remedies that can be differentiated in relation to multiple and subtle aspects.

First of all all the reactive forms can be treated, with rapid success, with remedies indicated precisely for the onset of symptoms following: moral suffering (Staphysagria), sentimental sorrows and sudden traumas, mostly due to loss (Ignatia and Arnica), strong fears (Aconitum or Gelsemium) but also in relation to periods of life, such as menopause, in which these disorders are more easily revealed (Lachesis and Sepia).

It is more difficult to treat endogenous forms, which at times use for a long time some of these remedies, when, that is, the picture of depression tends to become structural in the personality of the subject, and thus to permeate all his daily and relational experience. Obviously even in these cases the basic anatomical constitution will often influence the onset of the first ailments from an early age.

In this regard we recall that the more long-limbed constitutions, the so-called phosphoric, due to their underlying organic weakness are easier to feelings of self-depreciation which, if not properly corrected, can soon shape forms of depression, in which patients often find a a certain refuge from everyday life, and from its trials, coming to populate their unreal world with images and sounds, and to thus configure pictures that are actually the gateway to schizoid or frankly schizophrenic disorders. In these individuals it will be necessary to intervene early with the main and constitutional remedies of the phosphoric series, and which are: Calcarea Phosphorica, Phoshorus and Kali phosporicum .

Endogenous depression develops obviously in ambitious and perfectionist personalities, which aim to cover the first places of society, when they find interference in their way of acting (Lycopodium and Nux vomica) while in highly hypochondriac subjects they are often the consequence of their way of thinking in presence of disorders and diseases ( Thuja and Nitric acidum ).

Finally Arsenicum and Aurum show a noteworthy participation of organic CNS damages, on vascular base, which exacerbate in the long run characters of aggressiveness ( Aurum ) or anxiety and agitation (Arsenicum) typical, always, of the subjects affected.
