Causes of greasy hair

Oily hair is due to excessive sebum production by the sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands are cutaneous appendages that develop in the dermis associated with a hair follicle. The glands that secrete sebum are located externally with respect to the hair follicle and emit sebum inside the follicle following a hormonal impulse.

The sebaceous glands begin their activity starting from puberty and are influenced by hormonal activity, in particular dihydrotestosterone, a form of testosterone. Testosterone is a typically male hormone but is also produced in the female adrenal glands: in humans it is responsible, among other things, for androgenetic alopecia, the irreversible hair loss.

The role of sebum is to lubricate and protect the hair from external agents but alterations in testosterone levels can cause the sebaceous glands to produce too much sebum which, in the scalp, causes the hair to appear oily and opaque.

How to wash greasy hair

Greasy hair should be washed more often than normal and dry hair. In fact, excess sebum must be removed in order to have clean, light and soft hair. However, it is important to choose mild detergents that do not contain aggressive surfactants and do not completely remove the sebum, otherwise the hair will be free of its natural protection and will be more exposed to the attack of external agents. Greasy hair can therefore also be washed every day, provided a gentle shampoo is used.

When washing greasy hair it is preferable not to use very hot water and drying with a hair dryer should be carried out at a close distance and at the minimum temperature.

In the case of greasy hair, it is better to avoid the use of balms and nourishing masks that tend to make the hair heavier: if the hair appears fat on the scalp but dry on the tips, it is possible to treat only tips with masks or balms. shampoo excluding the scalp.

Natural remedies for oily hair

In addition to treating the diet, to solve the problem of oily hair it is advisable to choose the correct shampoo and other cosmetic treatments to be performed.

A shampoo suitable for oily hair should contain one or more plant extracts with astringent, sebum-balancing and disinfectant properties.

Among the plants with astringent action we find burdock, ivy, tea. Extracts with antiseptic properties and which act by regulating the production of sebum are obtained instead from birch, juniper and mint. Also very useful is the oil obtained from amla, a plant with multiple properties used in Ayurvedic medicine.

If oily dandruff is also associated with oily dandruff, it may be useful to choose products that include nettle and essential oils of tea tree, lavender, sage or sweet orange, in addition to the just-seen extracts.

In addition to shampooing, lotions can be applied to the scalp, which can help improve the appearance of the hair and reduce the frequency of washing.

Another method to reduce washings is to apply a dry shampoo based on sebum-absorbing substances, such as clay, rhassoul powder, rice or corn starch, to the scalp: gently massage every other day a spoonful of one of these substances directly on the skin and leave for about fifteen minutes, then remove the dust by brushing the hair. Clays and starches are able to absorb excess sebum, improving the appearance of greasy hair.

After cleansing, rinsing with water and apple vinegar or water and lemon juice in equal parts can be carried out : in fact vinegar and lemon have an astringent and disinfectant action and give the hair a healthy and shiny appearance.

If oily skin, acne and hirsutism are associated with oily hair, consult a dermatologist or endocrinologist who excludes important hormonal imbalances.
