Herbal remedies against sunburn



In the case of sunburn the first advice is: better prevention than cure, also because the holiday with erythema is ruined a little.

The second piece of advice is: better to resort to natural remedies than to cortisone, antihistamines during the holiday because then you have to be careful not to expose yourself to the sun, for the risk of stains from photosensitization and exacerbation of erythema.

Let's see what herbal remedies can be useful for dealing with a possible erythema that affects us while we are on vacation at the beach and we have not implemented a prophylaxis to prevent its appearance.

Hypericum oil

In case of burns and erythema we can use hypericum oil to calm redness, burning and itching . Hypericum oil is rich in flavonoids, tannins and hypericin, which characterize its healing, analgesic and decongestant action.

Soothes the skin when it is very red and particularly irritated by erythema. Two or three applications of hypericum are enough to see the results already. It can be an excellent after-sun to be used normally. The only warning is to not use it before sun exposure because it is photosensitive.

Aloe gel

Aloe gel is our cure for skin in general. In case of sun exposure burns and erythema with itchy papules the aloe gel is a source of hydration, refreshing and decongestant.

It is rich in polysaccharides and mucilaginous substances that serve to reconstruct the hydrolipidic film of the skin put to the test by solar exposure.

It may happen that after application the skin becomes even more red, but it is an effect that passes within a few minutes and is given by the work of restoring the temperature of the skin in depth, which brings to the surface the "fire" that we have absorbed.

When this phenomenon occurs we let the aloe gel work for 5/10 minutes and then rinse with fresh water. The effect will be very pleasant, the skin will be hydrated, decongested and fresh. For an even more pleasant effect we keep our aloe gel in the refrigerator.

Oatmeal

Oat flour is a soothing remedy famous for hypersensitive skin and now an indispensable component in some face creams. In the case of sunburn and sunburn , oatmeal reduces redness, removes burning and soothes . The flour is diluted with water and compresses are made with a natural sponge or with linen. Oatmeal can also be used in the bath water for a refreshing and soothing bath.

Helichrysum oil

Helichrysum is a flower with multiple properties: expectorant, calming, and can be used to sedate sunburn . Applied on the skin it restores elasticity, reduces redness and itching. Helichrysum is useful for all sensitive skin, which becomes easily inflamed and after sun exposure.

Calendula cream

Calendula has an anti-inflammatory activity on erythema. It reduces redness, burning and itching and thanks to its antibiotic properties it protects against those bacteria that can contract in the summer to the sea and that threaten our skin.

On the market we can find the calendula in cream, easy to use, light and spreadable on burns and erythema, but also to be used as restorative after-sun after a day spent in the sun.

Prevent sunburn

If we play ahead, however, we can avoid the appearance of erythema and strengthen the skin in the sun. Such as? With simple natural remedies that stimulate the ascent of melanin, our UV protection.

The beta-carotenes are useful principles to be deployed starting a few months before leaving for the holidays and in any case before the arrival of summer. In herbal medicine or in pharmacies we can find supplements with lycopene, carrot oil , marigold extracts, coenzyme Q10 which prepare the skin in the sun, strengthen it and protect it, thanks also to their antioxidant action.

A good cream with sunscreen 30 or even 50 for the first few days is a must if you are subject to erythema.

Those of new generation protect from the damage of UV rays while allowing to tan.
