Cinnamon: the aroma that warms the heart



The essential oil of cinnamon is extracted from the bark of the young branches, of about three years of Cinnamomum zeylanicum of the Lauraceae family, with the steam distillation method, by which a dark yellow liquid is obtained which gives off a spicy fragrance and sweet . In Ayurvedic medicine it was used as a remedy against impotence and for its warming and digestive virtues linked to the element of fire. It is precisely the heat that the essential cinnamon oil infuses in those who breathe it, enveloping the heart. In fact, cinnamon has a rubefacient essential oil, which means that it draws blood into the most superficial layers of the skin, warming the area.

Certainly cinnamon , due to its aroma, is one of the most used spices in the kitchen for flavoring sweets and typically oriental foods; its characteristic aroma makes it ideal for infusions and for perfuming cosmetic products. There are two types of cinnamon; the most famous is that of Ceylon and is also used to extract essential oil. The other species is of Chinese origin and is widespread in Laos, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Cinnamon essential oil: how it works on the psyche

Cinnamon essential oil, if inhaled, has a stimulating action on the nervous system. Promotes creativity and inspiration . It warms the heart and gives an enveloping sensation of "home", helps in cases of inner coldness, depression, loneliness and fear. Thanks to its invigorating properties it helps against tiredness and fatigue, because it accelerates breathing and heart rate.

Heat and passion are two elements that go hand in hand and cinnamon brings them together in its essence. In fact, since ancient times it is considered an essential aphrodisiac oil, because in contact with the skin it stimulates blood circulation and for this reason it is used to perform delicate and sensual massages on the whole body.

- Aphrodisiac massage : dilute a few drops of essential oil in 40-50ml of wheat germ oil or jojoba oil must always be conveyed because it could cause skin irritation.

Cinnamon essential oil: the effect on the body

Like all essential oils the essence of Cinnamon possesses an antibacterial action, conferred in its case to the presence of eugenol, safrole and eugenyl acate, effective in case of mycosis, fever, cough and cold, fermentative enterocolitis and diarrhea caused by intestinal infections and parasites. Internal use should be done for a short time, to avoid sensitization of the mucous membranes. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation and in children. For this property it was formerly used to preserve meat, because it blocked the process of putrefaction and the Egyptians used it during the mummification process.

Because of its warming power it is an excellent carminative, meaning it eliminates intestinal gases due to slow or bad digestion . It is used one or two drops diluted in vegetable oil, used as a vehicle, applied to the abdomen, then massaged in a circular direction. On the skin it is a rubefacient, that is it determines a strong heating of the area, so its use requires prudence, so it must always be diluted before massaging it, and it is effective against rheumatic pains, muscular stiffness due to trauma, tears, joint pain back pain, headache and cervical.
