Stella McCartney, sustainability in high fashion
Sustainability, respect for nature, respect for people and for their work, respect for animals, circular economy solutions: these are the cornerstones and the profuse commitment of stylist Stella McCartney .
The increasing use of sustainable, eco-woven materials, favoring the regeneration of waste materials, such as in the case of cashmere, one of the most valuable raw materials for fashion, but also of greater impact on the environment.
The Stella McCartney brand's knitwear collections are made not using virgin cashmere, but through a reworking of old cashmere fabrics carried on by a unique platform called Re.Verso ™ : qualities like softness and warmth are not lost, and at the same time the impact on the environment and on animals is limited.
New alternative materials
Other sustainable materials and innovative products become fashion: the fibers that come from sustainable forests, such as viscose, which comes from certified forests in Sweden; or even the "fur-free", for which alternative materials and vegetarian leather are used, without having to kill the animals to have one of the least necessary things in the world.
The metals used, about 15% each year by the brand, are low environmental impact, recycled or recyclable; attention is given, for example, not to affect copper abuse, whose mines often represent a threat of pollution; they prefer to experiment with new alternative materials in stainless steel or aluminum .
Nylon and polyester are also recycled, and non-PVC is used for the production of transparent pieces in the collection, for example in shoes or bags.
Organic cotton and silk
Stella McCartney uses 61% organic cotton to make her clothes - from clothes for children, to the denim or jersey line, through shoes, t-shirts and bags -, a raw material free of pesticides and chemicals, which does not harm the environment and which improves the conditions of workers and peasants.
Most of the silk used by the brand comes from certified factories in Como. Not only: the use of traditional silk is accompanied by the use of what is called "Peace Silk", the ethical silk that does not kill silkworms, but that lets the butterfly come out of the cocoon to live its life. Another brand that uses this type of silk is the Indian Ahima Silk.
