Someone said that those who know more, live better and spend less, compared to those who do not know. Those who know it are cured simply by eating, those who do not know are poisoned and deformed by eating, or by eating badly, and then treated with medicines.

This article wants to be an invitation to knowledge, an invitation to return to love each other, rediscovering together with our loved ones a Sunday walk in the countryside, going to collect local wild herbs and wild flowers, so as to know their properties and make them become our personal medicine, our care. It is a path of knowledge of the world and of oneself important to mature an intimate contact with our deepest being. The more we know each other, the better we care. Knowing yourself from an early age saves great efforts when you are older.

The most common wild herbs

Here are just a few indications of local wild herbs that can do us good:

  • Mallow : rich in mucilage, mallow is the natural anti-inflammatory par excellence. So go ahead for salads, soups, teas and herb cake, a kind of lunigiana focaccia stuffed with wild herbs.
  • The dandelion : a true natural cure-all, the dandelion is rich in natural constituents, such as vitamins (A, C), mineral salts, inulin, tannin. Excellent diuretic and purifying liver, lowers cholesterol and is useful against constipation.
  • Acacia : rich in vitamin C, it is not only used by bees to produce honey, but it also treats anemia and headaches . Its freshly bloomed flowers fried in batter, with a pinch of sugar, are excellent
  • Burdock : known for its purifying properties, it treats acne and lowers blood sugar. Its huge leaves are used for wraps against acne, roots and shoots.
  • Hawthorn : this large shrub with white flowers is rich in vitamin C and histamine, cures anxiety and palpitations, is good for the heart. The Romans were fond of it and ate it during the shows at the Colosseum together with the strawberry trees. Excellent as a relaxing herbal tea.
  • The red or white clover : it is an excellent cure for the male and female genital apparatus, rich as it is in specific antioxidants and phytoestrogens. The clover protects the prostate in men, fights menopausal disorders in women and, in both sexes, promotes fertility. It should be harvested in the summer at the time of maximum flowering, then dried to obtain powders and extracts.
  • La portulaca : this beautiful flower with fleshy petals, excellent in salads, tortelli and omelettes, is very rich in omega 3 and is useful for treating cardiovascular diseases .
  • Nettle : a fantastic source of mineral salts and iron, nettle is fantastic against anemia . Green light for risottos, tortelli, minestrone.

And what are the local wild herbs that hurt us? Absolutely to be avoided are: ranunculus, romice, robinia, vitalba, water pepper.

Advice and precautions

  • Learn to recognize wild plants well: do not collect plants that you do not know
  • Do not collect wild plants in dirty or polluted places.
  • Do not collect sick or moldy plants, do not leave the plants gathered for a long time in bags, better to carry a cloth bag. Once you vote at home, wash and distribute them on a plan for the destination.
