Essential oils for sinusitis

Sinusitis is an infectious process of the paranasal sinuses, cavities in the bones of the skull and of the face that are found above the eyebrows, at the junction of the nose, between the eyes and the nose, and between the eyes and the jaw.

They are full of air and are used to lighten the skeleton of the face and to act as a sounding board for the voice and are normally covered by mucus in direct contact with what covers the nose and pharynx.

Therefore sinusitis is a direct consequence of infectious problems that spread from the nose and pharynx to the paranasal sinuses and that do not allow adequate drainage of the mucus.

It is however possible to mitigate the symptoms with the help of natural remedies.

Essential oils to be used in case of sinusitis

There are combinations of essential oils that can be of enormous help in treating sinusitis symptoms.

Generally the essential oils used are those with a soothing, mucolytic and antibacterial action.

Mixture of essential oils for vapor inhalation

To carry out steam inhalations it is possible to use electric inhalers or even the classic pot filled with boiling water.

The mixture is the following, to be dissolved, in the quantities indicated, in hot water:

  • 2 drops of rosemary essential oil: antiseptic and useful for headaches and viral infections;

  • 1 drop of thyme essential oil: it is a powerful antiviral, as well as antibacterial and antibiotic. In case of hyperthyroidism it is contraindicated;

  • 1 drop of essential peppermint oil: thanks to its balsamic properties it helps the respiratory system; it is also anti-inflammatory and antiseptic.

In the mixture indicated above, thyme and peppermint can be replaced by the essential oil of eucalyptus and the essential oil of geranium: the eucalyptus is a strong antiviral and the geranium is an antiseptic.

Blend of essential oils for massage

In addition to steam inhalation it is possible to massage the aching parts with a mixture of essential oils, diluted in a base oil.

In a tablespoon of almond oil they melt

> 2 drops of rosemary essential oil,

> 2 drops of geranium essential oil

> 1 drop of eucalyptus essential oil.

A small amount of oil is massaged slightly on the forehead, on the eyebrows (be careful not to let the oil seep into the eyes) on the cheekbones and temples .

Finally you can purify the air by placing in a room diffuser the essential oil of tea tree or eucalyptus: they will allow aromatherapy to act simply by breathing and without doing anything else.

Sinusitis: recognize it from the symptoms

Symptoms of sinusitis consist of mucous excretions from the nose, headache and fever . Depending on the breasts involved, the pain spreads over the forehead, between the eyes, or over the jaws.

The diagnosis of sinusitis can only be made by a doctor and, since sinusitis can be of viral, bacterial or fungal origin, the intervention of a specialist is required. It may also have an allergic origin .
