Oils, oleolites and essential oils: what differences?

In natural well-being oils, oleolites and essential oils represent a wide and effective, versatile and easy to use resource.

There are oils of all kinds on the market, but it is not always easy to distinguish one preparation based on oils from another.

The wording is very important and gives information on the type of oily product you are going to use. Depending on whether they are oils, oleolites or essential oils, they have different properties, due to the methods of extraction and preparation, and to the part of the plant used .

oleolite oils and essential oils are distinguished not only by the name, but also and above all by the physical, mental, emotional and energy levels on which they act.

The oils

The simplest and most widespread preparation for use in various fields, from food to cosmetics, is oil : oil is obtained from the pressing of various parts of the plant, usually from the hazel tree or fruit seeds .

It is a product that can be made in large quantities and uses the most internal and hard part of the plant. The core, which represents the hidden nucleus of each fruit, and the seed of the fruits, which instead represents the essential part from which, if sown, a new plant, allow to exalt, through squeezing, this information: nutrients and regeneration .

There are many types of oils on the market ; the main advice is to read the label, to avoid that various oils are mixed together or with chemicals, prefer the organic ones and obtained by cold pressing .

Oils are usually used as a base for massages or cosmetic preparations, so always remember that whatever you put on your skin will enter your body, passing through the permeable barrier of the epidermis. Would you consciously introduce oil or solvents into yourself?

Oils act primarily on the physical plane, which is why they are used as a vehicle for other more concentrated oils or oleolites.

The oils mainly used are the following:

  • sweet almond oil

  • jojoba oil

  • sunflower oil.

Oleoliths

Another preparation used in natural treatments is oleolites .

The oleolites are prepared by macerating one or more parts of a plant in natural base oil : flowers, leaves, fruits, resins, barks, whether fresh or dried.

The oils described above can be used as a basis for maceration . The oleolites combine the active principle of the plant used with the properties of the base oil to which it has been added.

They are used like oils, for massages and compresses, and they act on the physical plane at a deeper level than the base oils.

The types of oleolites to be used are many and vary from the properties of the macerated plants . Each oil has specific qualities derived from the active principles of the plants and from the part of the plant used.

Essential oils

Essential oils are the most concentrated product within the vast variety of oil-based products used for natural treatments.

The essential oils are obtained from the flowered parts of the selected plants, by squeezing, extraction with solvents, enfleurage and by extraction in a current of steam .

As for oils and oleolites we always keep in mind that what we spread on our skin or inhale becomes part of us, so we pay attention to the composition of essential oils. We avoid those extracted by solvents or mixed with excipients of which we are not sure of the origin and we prefer, if possible, those obtained from plants derived from organic farming.

Essential oils are very concentrated because, to get a few drops of essential oil, many kilos of the part of the plant from which the active ingredient is to be extracted are usually needed.

They are called "essential" because they contain the essence of the plant from which the properties are derived, that highly volatile and ethereal part that gives the plant its perfume. They act, through use in aromatherapy, on all levels: physical, mental and energy. Being very concentrated, it is necessary to dilute them in base oils .

Unlike massage oils and oleolites, which have very wide and generalizable fields of application, essential oils act on a specific aspect, both in terms of aesthetics and aromatherapy . Being very powerful, they can also have specific contraindications . It is important, therefore, before using it, to be guided not only by one's own instinct, but also by those who have appropriate knowledge.
