The 3 groups of essential oils



The essential oil and the aroma produced by a plant in nature allow it to defend itself against parasites of various kinds and to heal its own tissues, regenerating itself.

In the same way, essential oils perform their reparative action also against the human body . Furthermore, perfumes, acting on hypothalamus and pituitary gland, allow to influence the hormonal production of human beings.

The 3 groups of essential oils

The subdivision of essential oils into 3 groups was carried out in the 19th century by GW Piesse, a scholar who grouped essential oils from various plants. Essential oils are divided into 3 groups according to the olfactory note they present.

Base note

The essential oils belonging to this group have a low, deep or heavy aroma of earth and bark. They evaporate over a long period of time and act primarily on the physical plane, reconnecting to the earth.

From an emotional and mental point of view they stabilize, rebalance, calm . An example of a very strong base note is the essential oil of Vetiver, with its hint of earth, as well as the essential oil of Patchouli, and the essential oil of Sandalwood, woody and heavy.

Other basic essential oils are:

  • Tea Tree essential oil,
  • Benzoin essential oil,
  • Cypress essential oil,
  • the essential oil of Basil,
  • Cinnamon essential oil,
  • the essential oil of Cloves,
  • the essential oil of Musk,
  • the essential oil of Pino,
  • the essential oil of Mirra.

Heart note

It is the note of the oils extracted from flowers, stems and leaves. They act as intermediate essential oils between basic and head ones. They have a sensual, flowery but not spicy note, and being placed halfway between the base oils and the head ones they have the function of rebalancing the two aspects, acting on the emotional center .

They connect the body and the head, tune the physical energies with the psychic ones. An example of this note is Lavender, extracted from flowers .

Other oils that belong to the group of the heart notes are:

  • Yarrow,
  • the Chamomile,
  • the sweet Jasmine,
  • the Geranium,
  • the Magnolia,
  • the Melissa,
  • the Rose in all its variations,
  • the Vanilla,
  • the Ylang Ylang.

Top note

In this group we find the essential oils extracted from the fruits and the skins of the fruits. The vibration of these essential oils is high, leads to the mental plane and stimulates intellectual and meditative activity .

They evaporate very quickly and have a particularly dynamic feature. They have refreshing power and lighten up from oppressed emotional states.

An example is Bergamot essential oil . Other essential essential oils are:

  • the essential oil of star anise,
  • Citronella essential oil,
  • Orange essential oil in all its variations,
  • the essential oil of Cedar,
  • the essential oil of Eucalyptus,
  • Lemon essential oil,
  • Grapefruit essential oil,
