Tamanu oil, benefits and use



In Polynesia (but not only, even in Madagascar and other tropical countries) this large evergreen tree grows spontaneously, it is called tamanu or tamanù and its seeds produce a very precious oil .

Calophyllum Inophillum, so called by its botanical name, and its fruit have long been considered sacred by the Polynesian tribes .

The wood was even used to sculpt the precious tikis, the characteristic idols, and for the construction of canoes.

The oil, once also used to illuminate, continues to be a fundamental ingredient in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and massage therapy and massage fields .

What is tamanu oil

Tamanu oil is obtained by cold pressing the kernels of dried fruits, of the species of large green olives, which once dried look like hazelnuts.

It is a dense and emerald green oil, which has a very aromatic, intense and characteristic fragrance, which can recall olive oil pomace oil.

It is a very versatile oil in the cosmetic and curative field : it is used from sunscreens to healing creams, passing through anti-wrinkle creams and for acne treatment.

The vegetable oil in question is also very rich in free fatty acids, which could be a little aggressive for the most delicate skins, but which is excellent for the treatment and prevention of various disorders.

It will then be sufficient to dilute the tamanu oil in a carrier oil to make it less aggressive, using sesame oil, shea butter or sweet almond oil.

Benefits of Tamanu oil

Tamanu oil is used as:

  • antiseptic, disinfectant, astringent; it is therefore ideal in case of irritations, wounds, infections, such as erythema, acne, or other dermatological disorders, as it is a powerful healing agent; also excellent as antifungal, for skin, hair, hands, feet and nails
  • regenerating the skin, it is excellent against cellular aging, fights wrinkles and even unsightly spots;
  • moisturizing, soothing, emollient and protective; excellent for example for newborns, to soothe diaper rash, and for children;
  • anti-inflammatory, ideal for massages and for those who need to appease rheumatic and arthritic olors, but also sciatica, tendinitis and the like.
  • stimulant : increases microcirculation, perfect therefore for the lower limbs and to soothe the annoying sensation of heavy legs .

How to use tamanù oil

Apply the product morning and evening on the areas to be treated .

Attention : it can be used directly on the skin, even if not for long periods: due to its rubefiante action, it is preferred diluted in other oils or in shea butter.

    Where to find and how much tamanù oil costs

    Tamanu oil is still rather difficult to find in herbalists ; it is more easily found via the internet, in sites specializing in natural products, oils and pure butters.
