Scars affect posture

The large surgical scars, especially those performed at the level of the neck, thorax and abdomen, are made up of anelastic fibrous tissue that creates a knot at the level of the fascial and muscular planes preventing their normal tissue elasticity .

Right from the post-operative stage, they are able to modify the posture of the subject in an imperceptible manner because they draw a traction at the level of the superficial fascia that envelops our whole body and transmits, in the same way, the forces at a distance from the site in which it is located.

This creates an imbalance of its center of gravity that will begin to compress structures in a completely asymmetrical way, creating overloads on the joints between the vertebral bodies and the lower limbs. Moreover, according to osteopathy, the viscera included in the compression regions can undergo an alteration of their mobility (during the respiratory acts all the viscera move with the displacement of the diaphragm) and a reduction of the micro-circulation, creating suffering, the one that translated into osteopathic language, called "visceral osteopathic dysfunction".

The osteopath, in front of a large scar, first evaluates the subject's posture, then performs some visceral and articular mobility tests and, finally, intervenes with some release techniques (stretching) of the connective tissue at the level of the fascia superficialis affected by the scar restoring postural balance.
