Beans rich in raffinose, to be avoided in the event of aerophagia
What is the aerofagia
The aerophagia consists in the tendency to swallow too much air, which can cause an aerogastria, that is an excessive presence of air in the stomach.
Abnormal stomach dilation caused by excess air can give abdominal cramps. We all eat air, the problem is created when we ingest it too much.
Aerofagia is often associated with anxiety and nervousness. Other causes may be drinking or eating too quickly, smoking cigarettes, chewing gum, using some dental prostheses. Proper nutrition can help a lot.
The most common symptoms of aerophagia are flatulence and belching, as well as swelling and abdominal pain.
Feeding by aerophagia: which foods to take and which to avoid
All carbohydrates can cause gas formation, while fats and proteins are not generally responsible. The diet for aerofagia must therefore be first of all low in carbohydrates. Especially fructose, lactose, raffinose and sorbitol are responsible for the formation of gas.
- Lactose, as is known, is the sugar naturally contained in milk and derivatives; it is also often found in processed foods such as cereals, condiments, bread and other baked goods.
- Raffinose is mainly contained in beans, but some vegetables also contain small amounts, such as cabbage and asparagus.
- Fructose is the sugar naturally found in many types of fruit and vegetables, for example artichokes, onions and pears. Wheat also contains fructose. This sugar is also often used as a sweetener.
- Sorbitol is found naturally in many types of fruit, including apples and peaches and is often used as a sweetener.
They cause a production of gas, and therefore they are not particularly suitable in the diet for aerofagia, also all foods containing starches, for example potatoes.
Rice, however, while containing starch does not produce gas; it is therefore a food to be included absolutely in the diet against aerofagia.
Obviously, we must not exclude from the diet all foods that contain carbohydrates, only consume them with more moderation . However, everything that causes gas formation without nourishment can be avoided, for example sugary drinks with added carbon dioxide; sweets and chewing gum; too elaborate desserts.
It is also important to eat calmly and relaxed ; a meal consumed in a hurry in front of the computer or TV is not a good habit and can exacerbate the aerofagia problem; it is therefore necessary to carve out the necessary time and eat slowly.
