Mycosis of nails: causes and remedies

When we realize we have nails flaking, stained, yellowed, sometimes causing pain to the nail bed below, if pressed, we are faced with fungal forms and must intervene to stem the infection and save the nail.

The causes of onychomycosis

Let's talk about onychomycosis, or mushrooms that affect the nails of hands and feet, a real nuisance!

The causes can be of various kinds. Often the fungal infections of the toenails originate from damp environments and the shoes themselves become infectious cradles, in which bacteria called dermatophytes find a favorable habitat. Excessive sweating of the foot, shoes made of non-breathable material, and a humid environment in which one rests for a long time are among the most common causes.

Fungal infections of the hands and feet can also occur in environments such as swimming pools, showers, gyms where it is easier to come into contact with bacteria that dwell in damp and rapidly transmissible places.

Even those with diabetes and diseases that lower the immune system can be more easily affected by onychomycosis.

The dermatophytes manage to penetrate into small lesions of the skin or between the nail and its nail bed and proliferate there to make the nail yellowed, thickened and flaked.

Remedies for onychomycosis

Hands and feet above all must be safeguarded, guaranteeing hygiene and health in the first place.

It is easier to keep clean, dry and hydrated the nails of the hands naturally, but it is important to try to give the same attention to the feet, with daily disinfectant washes, hydration and above all a dry environment .

So we choose absorbent and breathable stockings and shoes, change them every day and in the case of full-blown fungal diseases, remember to also disinfect the shoes .

  • Tea Tree Oil: melaleuca essential oil is a natural antifungal, useful for combating various forms of infection. It can also be used pure on the mucous membranes, but I recommend diluting 3 drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil, also excellent for cooking olive oil, before applying it on the nails. We will see an increase in the flaking of the nail that will take on an increasingly whitish color. In some cases, the diseased nail is lost to allow a new nail to grow.
  • Thyme essential oil, linalol chemotype is an antibacterial useful in case of nail fungus, warts, herpes. The essence of Timo must necessarily be diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the nail and if possible between the nail and the nail bed. It can also be associated in synergy with Tea tree.
  • Ventilated green clay: it is rich in bacteriostatic minerals and can be used to create an antifungal disinfectant mixture. We mix 2 tablespoons of clay, water as needed, 1 teaspoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 5 drops of tea tree. We apply this poultice on the part affected by mycosis and on the surrounding areas. Let it work for about half an hour and then rinse. It is important to dry the part well and wear breathable socks.
  • Talc Mentolato : a refreshing and medicated talc that we can mix with powdered rice starch, to be sprinkled in the shoes to keep them dry and to guarantee a protected environment to the foot.
