Nutrition and diabetes

What is diabetes

The term diabetes refers to a metabolic alteration caused by an insulin deficiency, caused by hyperglycemia, or an increase in normal blood glucose levels in a subject. Blood glucose in the blood should average between 70 and 110 milligrams per deciliter of blood. The diabetic pathology is identified when, after three successive checks, the glycemic rate exceeds 120 milligrams per deciliter.

There are two forms of diabetes: type 1, insulin dependent, and type 2, non-insulin dependent. These two types usually involve subjects with different age groups. The youngest in the first type, the over 40s in the second type, especially if overweight. In this second case, the pathology evolves slowly, frequently associating with a resistance of the peripheral tissues to the action of the hormone in question.

Diabetes is one of the most widespread metabolic diseases, affecting 2% of the population. Often, it is of hereditary origin. It often happens that diabetes runs without presenting symptoms and it is therefore advisable to undergo, after the age of thirty, a blood glucose test. No need to joke . Diabetes complications include eye damage (diabetic retinopathy, cataract and blindness), arteriosclerosis, heart attack, urinary tract infections and kidney diseases and foot dysfunctions that, in extreme cases, turn into a need for amputation.

The diabetic can benefit enormously from a balanced diet . Thus we see better the relationship between nutrition and diabetes.

Nutrition and diabetes

Nutrition and diabetes are closely related. Diet plays a fundamental role in the management of the disease and its control, so much so that it represents a therapy in all respects ( diet therapy ). Physical activity and lifestyle change is therefore interfaced with a change in eating habits and with the choice of nutrients in terms of quality and quantity.

The low glycemic index is the prerogative of the diet for the diabetic. Starting from the subject's eating style, a special diet is prescribed, sewn onto the person, gradually changing the frequency of positive and negative habits. Maintaining health is the same for both a diabetic and a healthy person. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates, which increase blood sugar levels. So quantity to keep under observation . When it comes to an overweight patient, it goes without saying that the diet is aimed at disposing of excessive weight.

The American Diabetes Association has proposed an optimal diet for diabetes, based on a carbohydrate share ranging from 45 to 55% of total calories. Other studies have highlighted how sucrose does not increase blood sugar compared to starch. Common sugar is not strictly prohibited, but is properly counted in the total caloric intake, replacing the other carbohydrates (maximum 30 grams per day).

It should be noted that some pathology mechanisms are not yet fully understood.
