The bergamot for cholesterol: benefits and use

The English love Earl Gray Tea and perhaps we only know it for that; instead bergamot is the fruit with multiple properties.

Its health benefits are now proven by scientific research.

Especially to fight cholesterol , he is a true champion. Let's explore together the benefits and uses of bergamot for cholesterol.

The bergamot for cholesterol: benefits

Bergamot is a typical Calabrian plant , even if by now there are cultivations all over the world .

Over time, traditions, recipes and scientific studies have accumulated to demonstrate the multiple beneficial effects of bergamot, in the form of essential oil and juice above all, on human health.

The proven efficacy is against high cholesterol ; in fact bergamot juice contains two substances of the flavonoid family (esperetin and naringenin) which have the same anti-cholesterol effects as synthetic drugs ( statins, with various side effects), but without the side effects of the latter.

Molecules such as statins within the body inhibit the enzyme hepatic reductase which promotes cholesterol synthesis in the liver. For this reason bergamot helps to reduce total cholesterol levels .

But there's more. For mechanisms still to be studied, the administration of bergamot juice, in addition to decreasing total cholesterol levels, contributes to the decrease in blood LDL levels ("bad" cholesterol) and to the increase in those of HDL ("good" cholesterol ). In this way it helps to keep the blood vessels healthy , helping to prevent cardiovascular disorders .

Bergamot for cholesterol: use

Bergamot has been widely used in the food industry, in gastronomy and ... in the kitchens of many Italian mothers.

The uses of bergamot for the control of cholesterol levels are above all these:

  • Pure bergamot extract (essence): used both as aromatherapy, in a diffuser, and for internal therapy, 1-2 drops diluted in water, away from meals;
  • The fruit: in abundant and frequent doses it can be effective for a delicate cholesterol control;
  • The juice: it is the best use to obtain the greatest anti-cholesterol effect . Clinical studies have been carried out by administering 50 cc of bergamot juice within a day, between meals, for 60 days.

Attention to do-it-yourself : in the case of anticoagulant therapies or other pharmacological therapies in progress, it is always better to ask your doctor for advice, to avoid side effects and negative interactions.
