Definition

" Sleepiness can be defined as a basal physiological condition comparable to hunger and thirst, which emerges when our body needs sleep. It can occur in many circumstances, especially as a tendency to fall asleep in the absence of psychosensory stimuli or in monotonous situations. In reality sleepiness is a very specific condition, related to the reduction of the level of vigilance, which manifests itself not only with the tendency to fall asleep even with other symptoms, such as difficulties in memorizing and processing data, inability to maintain constant attention, slowing down of decision-making processes, the worsening of motor performance ". Drowsiness is not a disorder, but an effect of a disorder! This is why it is important to look for the cause.

Causes of Drowsiness

The causes of drowsiness can be physiological or pathological. Physiological drowsiness is related to an excessive outflow of energies during waking, higher than the physiological resistance of the subject.

It can be a physical or mental fatigue, which calls for sleep compensation. On the other hand, drowsiness can also be caused by a lack of psychophysical stimuli, by a condition of laxity that "extinguishes" attention, by simple boredom because the stresses that the subject's mind needs are much more complex than his personal reality reserves.

Instead, there are far more serious causes that fall into the pathological sphere. Wrong lifestyles, side effects of certain drugs, sleep disorders, post-prandial drowsiness, neurological diseases are among the main causes of sleepiness.

The causes and natural remedies for fatigue

Sleep disorders

Sleep disorders leave more or less heavy after-effects in the waking phase and sleepiness is one of the most typical effects, triggered by insufficient or qualitatively deficient sleep.

Dissomnias like Phase Delay Syndrome (the subject defined as an "owl chronotype" tends to retreat in the late hour and struggle to wake up in the morning), the Phase Advance Syndrome (the "lark chronotype" subject wakes up very early to morning), the Jet-Lag Syndrome (caused by the sudden changes in time zones for intercontinental travel) can cause disturbances in the waking phase, decrease in concentration, drowsiness.

The actual insomnia, in which sleep is deprived of its physiological time in a constant, chronic manner, causes its effects to fall back on lifestyle, daytime activities, degrees of attention and concentration, cognitive processes, and the Drowsiness becomes the primary condition in which the subject suffers from this disorder.

Medication Drowsiness

There are many medications that induce sleep as a side effect or an effect due to their abuse. Remedies for allergies such as antihistamines can cause drowsiness, mental heaviness.

Life-saving medicines, indispensable, which must be administered daily on a constant basis can be the cause of drowsiness. A wide range of psychiatric drugs has a hypno-inducing effect, both for treatment and for side effects.

Postprandial sleepiness

The manifestation of drowsiness after meals is widespread. It is due to digestive slowdowns, liver disorders and even hepatic encephalopathies. Mechanically the digestive blood is recalled by the digestive tract, taking it away from other districts, even the cerebral ones, inducing drowsiness. A more careful diet, with meals consumed calmly and well chewed can safeguard from this phenomenon.

The intake of alcohol as well as a poorly balanced diet tires the liver: "a non-performing liver generates ammonia and fails to detoxify alcohol and can cause daytime sleepiness and poor quality sleep " (Hepatology Review).

A study by the University of Padua and the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of Zurich has shown the direct relationship between ammoniama (amount of ammonia in the blood) and sleep: hyperammonemia is associated with an increased incidence of sleepiness diurnal and sleep modification monitored through polysomnography.

The result of the research has elected the main organ liver that influences sleep and its quality and on which to work for a correct nutritional re-education and a consequent sleep-wake balance. A compromised liver is not able to exercise full control over the levels of ammonia in the blood and this dysfunction can lead to neurological disorders such as hepatic encephalopathy, a reversible pathology: drowsiness is an alarm bell.
