The thallus of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus, also called marine oak contains mucopolysaccharides (among which stands out alginic acid, fucoidan and laminarin) polyphenols, vitamins (especially B1, C, E), polyphenols, tannins, sterols, plant pigments (fucoxanthin, beta-carotene) mineral salts (iodine, bromine, potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron).

Description of the plant
Fucus is a brown alga of 30-40 cm. typical of cold sea bottoms it is common in the British islands and in the Atlantic ones of America and northern Europe, it also grows along the rocky coasts of Morocco, reproducing itself solely by fragmentation.
It has a branched shape with lobes that recall the shape of the leaves of an oak tree and the characteristic swollen air vesicles which serve to support the plant in order to avoid flattening on the bottom.

The "drug" (part utilized) corresponds to the thallus, harvested, generally starting from the second year of age from the month of May until the end of the summer . Fresh seaweed is used, as it loses most of its properties.
The mother tincture of fucus is prepared with a drug weight ratio : 1:10 solvent and an alcohol content of 65% vol .

The mother tinctures have no contraindications except those of the plant itself, diluted in a little water can be administered to all, the alcohol contained in them is thus diluted, so it is harmless. Due to the high iodine content it should not be taken in the evening and for long periods (max 60 days).
It should not be used in patients with thyroid disease or hypothyroidism, or who are taking thyroxine, because when the effects are added, it can cause tremors, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia and arterial hypertension.
