Among the most common causes of diarrhea are infections caused by harmful bacteria, ingested through contaminated food or water; viral infections (herpes simplex and hepatitis) parasites of the gastrointestinal system.

Diarrhea can also be the reaction of our body to drugs, antibiotics, hypotensive, chemotherapeutic, antacids containing magnesium which exerts a laxative action.

Beyond the diet, the natural remedies used in phytotherapy for the treatment of diarrhea consist of herbs and officinal plants with an astringent action for the feces and anti-inflammatory for the intestinal mucosa and food supplements based on live lactic ferments to restore the balance of the bacterial flora and regularize bowel function.

Herbs and officinal plants in case of diarrhea

  • Blueberry : ( Vaccinium Myrtillus) the first therapeutic prescription is documented by Dioscorides, who reported it in the treatment of dysenteric forms. In fact, the leaves and dried fruits of the blueberry have an anti-diarrheal action due to the high content of tannins, active ingredients with astringent properties . Cranberry anthocyanins also have an antiseptic effect, useful in the treatment of abdominal painful colic. Recently it has been discovered that these active ingredients inhibit the adhesion of colibacilli to the wall of the intestine and bladder, thus providing an explanation for their use in urinary and intestinal infections, caused by the alteration of the bacterial flora.
  • Potentilla : (Potentilla Tormentilla) has always been known for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, healing, bacteriostatic and antiviral activity, for this it is used against all forms of diarrhea and for inflammation of the mucous membranes, especially intestinal. The name tormentilla derives from the Latin tormina which means "visceral pains" in reference to the therapeutic properties of the plant. These properties are due to the high concentration of tannins in the phytocomplex of the rhizome, which make it a very effective remedy in case of chronic enteritis, fermentative gastroenteritis .
  • Cinnamon : ( Cinnamomum zeylanicum) the bark contains essential oils with antibacterial action, given by the presence of eugenol, safrole and eugenyl acetate, effective in case of fermentative enterocolitis and diarrhea caused by intestinal infections and parasites. For this property it was formerly used to preserve meat, because it blocked the process of putrefaction; while the Egyptians used it during the mummification process.
  • Psyllium : it is generally indicated for chronic constipation, because the mucilages contained in the seeds make it a very effective but harmless natural laxative, of mechanical type. When in contact with water these substances swell and increase in volume, thus favoring the expulsion of the faeces. For this reason psyllium is also useful in the presence of diarrhea: in this case the mucilages absorb the excess of liquids, and increase the consistency of the fecal bole (also called chyme). Furthermore, mucilages are polysaccharides of complex chemical composition, belonging to the water-soluble fiber categories and therefore have an anti-inflammatory, emollient and protective effect for the mucous membranes that line the intestinal walls.

What are the officinal plants for bowel health?

gemmoderivati

From the young shoots of the variety Vaccinum vitis idaea (cranberry) we get the anti-inflammatory gemmoderivative par excellence of the intestine. Its regulatory action corrects the imbalances of enterocolic mobility, therefore it is used both in the case of constipation and in the presence of diarrhea; and to restore intestinal enzymatic activity.

For this reason it is also used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, because it eliminates flatulence, due to the fermentation of feces, it bleaches the walls and normalizes the functioning of the intestine, especially of the colon.

Lactic ferments in case of diarrhea

Lactic ferments are used for diarrhea whatever its cause, to balance and enrich the bacteria (probiotics) that make up our flora.

We can define the bacterial flora an "ecosystem", formed by about 400-500 different species of microorganisms, able to act as a defensive barrier, and to promote the absorption of nutrients derived from food, restoring intestinal function.

Infections, stress, poisoning and food allergies, pharmacological or antibiotic therapies can cause diarrhea, precisely because they inflame the intestine and alter the balance of the flora, which can be replenished by taking live milk enzymes.
