Headache in children

Headache in children

Headache in children is a more frequent problem than people think, especially in school age. According to some statistics it appears, in fact, that about 25% -30% of children report having had at least one episode of headache during the school year.

But what are the remedies for headaches in children ?

To find the remedy one must first look for the cause; in fact, there are different types of headaches. The first distinction to be made is between primary headache and secondary headache . The first form of headache is related to a constitutional predisposition; in the case of secondary headaches, instead, it is the symptom of an underlying condition that must be identified and then cured.

The causes of secondary headaches can be many and of varying severity: vision disorders, problems with teeth and jaws, upper airway infections, traumas or more serious pathologies. In general, however, it is rare that the cause is a serious illness; it is much more frequent that it is sinusitis, flu and parainfluenza syndromes, myopia, or even simple fatigue.

Remedies for headaches in children

Among the remedies for headaches in children, the first is definitely prophylaxis. Here is, therefore, a list of situations to be avoided, or to pay attention to, to prevent headaches:

  • Feeding : some foods, for example chocolate, can promote the onset of headaches. It is also necessary to avoid prolonged fasting or insufficient food intake, which are other causes of headaches;
  • Sleep : children must rest a sufficient number of hours, especially during the night. Insufficient sleep or rest is a factor favoring headaches;
  • Stress : stress and fatigue are often the cause of headaches in children, subjected to too many commitments and subject to excessive expectations by adults;
  • Physical activity too intense : excessive physical effort favors the onset of headache.

Drugs are generally not recommended in children and are prescribed only in the most severe cases. There are effective natural remedies; a technique that has given excellent results is biofeedback, which is used to teach the patient to relax contracted muscles .

In any case, the first thing to do in case of headaches is to reassure the child and keep him at rest in a quiet and poorly lit place.

In case of headaches in children, especially if persistent, it is advisable to contact the pediatrician, who will be able to indicate which remedies to use. Do it yourself, if it is not recommended in adults, it is absolutely to be avoided in the child.
