Curated by Daniela Galbiati, naturopath

Old Man Banksia is an Australian flower remedy derived from Banksia serrata . Giving energy and enthusiasm helps to manage any situation that life presents. Let's find out better.

Description of the plant

Banksia serrata - was one of the first plants discovered by Joseph Banks, an English naturalist and botanist, to whom we owe the name of the genus. Like the other members of the Proteaceae family, Old Man Banksia is adaptable, and can be found in arid lands or in inhospitable areas, but normally grows on woodlands and open forests.

It can reach 17 meters in height and, as it ages, develops a massive, knotty trunk enclosed by a dark, corrugated and irregular bark. The leaves are rigid, shiny, dark green, have a length of 16 cm and are regularly serrated. Towards the summer ends the erect, velvety and brown gems slowly discover the immature silvery green spikes; from the base along the cone, the flowers gradually open, changing color from fawn-golden to orange, to the red of when withered.

In the end only the wood cone of 8 - 16 cm remains covered by a soft short hair, from dove gray to rust red. Cones contain winged seeds that can stay on trees for years. During flowering they are rich in nectar that attracts birds, marsupials and insects.
