How many liters of blood are there in the human body?

It looks like a question from We Are Like This or Other Educational Cartoons, But How Many Liters of Blood Do We Really Have in the Human Body ?

Knowing how to answer this question also means having at heart ourselves and the knowledge of our body.

Knowing how to answer these questions also changes the perception of what we choose between foods to feed us, the type of physical movement we do.

The composition of the fluid we call blood is somewhat complex and has its own specific mass ; an adult has from 4.5 to 5.5 liters of blood, the blood mass constitutes about 8% of the body weight.

It is actually a liquid connective tissue that provides the body with the nutrients and oxygen needed for cellular respiration. The lightest blood is the arterial one, the darkest venous one.

Blood in the human body: what happens when we get hurt

When we accidentally get a wound, the body reacts immediately. It is as if a perfect repair machine has been set in motion which acts through various phases.

For example, healing takes place in four overlapping phases, according to a precise system; extremely complex and efficient processes are set in motion, which stop bleeding. Our circulatory system, made up of about 100, 000 km of blood vessels, blocks leaks and repairs itself.

Once the bleeding has ceased, the inflammation is activated: the blood vessels that initially had shrunk to reduce blood loss in the next phase do the opposite: they dilate to increase the blood flow in the wound area. It then happens that a protein-rich fluid causes the affected part to swell; the task of this fluid is to dilute the toxins and remove the damaged tissue. In all these phases millions of specialized molecules and cells are produced.

Within two weeks then the cells that form the fibers on the wound go towards the damaged part and multiply. New capillaries branch out in the direction of the wound, specific cells are generated that close it. If it is accompanied by a fracture, the bones gradually return to strength and the fibers formed on the damaged soft tissues are replaced by more resistant materials. It is an extraordinary planned coordination in all respects.

Transfusions, donations, law in Italy

It cannot be said that at the legislative level the legislator has been dormant since 2002 until today about the transfusion reforms.

In particular, in the three-year period 2005-2007, the most intense and important national and community legislative production regarding transfusion activities recorded to date has occurred. In those years many rules were redefined regarding the protocols for ascertaining the suitability of the blood donor and blood components and in the two following years decisions were taken regarding the traceability of blood and blood components intended for transfusions.

Very important is the Legislative Decree 6 November 2007, n. 191 on "Implementation of Directive 2004/23 / EC on the definition of quality and safety standards for the donation, procurement, control, processing, preservation, storage and distribution of human tissues and cells".

For information on the transfusion system in Italy, see the official website where the directives of the Ministry of Health on voluntary donation, the protection of citizens' health and the pursuit of blood self-sufficiency, blood components and blood products as a national strategic objective are well explained. not divisible and sustainable with the help of all the players in the system.
