The essential oil of palmarosa has bactericidal, antimicrobial and disinfectant properties that make it a valid ally in case of alterations of the intestinal flora, for example. But it also turns out to be a good tonic, stimulating and above all expectorant, useful for the treatment of some respiratory tract infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis, nasopharyngitis and otitis. It is also a valid remedy for the treatment of mental fatigue, nervousness and stress, thanks to its stimulating action on the nervous system.

The essential oil of palmarosa, thanks to its moisturizing, regenerating, sebum-regulating and antiseptic properties, is indicated externally in the case of acne, dermatitis, skin infections, scars, sores and wrinkles . It is also used to treat inflammation of the genitals and cystitis .

Description of the plant

Also called "geranium of the Indies", the palmarosa is a plant native to India and Pakistan, with fantastic therapeutic virtues little known to us.

The palmarosa is a wild shrub with long and thin stems that end in delicate pink flowers, which grows up to two meters high, characteristic of Asia, in particular of India, Pakistan and rocky slopes of the Himalayas. It is also distilled at over 3000 meters in Nepal; it is also found in Brazil, Indonesia, Africa and the Comoros Islands.

Use and practical advice on essential oil of palmarosa

The palmarosa essential oil is indicated both for internal use and for external use.

  • As a balancing and antiseptic for the intestine, a couple of drops per day are recommended in a spoonful of honey or maple syrup, all dissolved in half a glass of warm water.
  • To combat nervousness and stress, just a teaspoon of honey with 2 drops of essential oil in the most difficult moments.
  • Ideal for disinfecting the skin, it is excellent to dilute 10 drops of essential oil of palmarosa in the bath water or by pouring three drops on a wet sponge glove to be used in the shower for a gentle massage.
  • To treat and nourish the skin and prevent unsightly wrinkles, add 5 or 10 drops to the moisturizer or face oil.
  • In the case of respiratory tract infections, we recommend using suffimigi with five drops of oil in a basin of hot water and a teaspoon of bicarbonate, covering the head with a towel and breathing in the steam.

The essence can also be used in diffusers to perfume the environment.

Contraindications of the essential oil of palmarosa

Palmarosa essential oil has no particular contraindications; its use is not recommended during pregnancy and on newborns. Like all essential oils, it should never be used pure on the skin, but diluted in other basic substances, such as vegetable oils (sweet almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil) or creams.

Background

Palmarosa has been known since ancient times, with the best known name of "Indian geranium": at the time it made long journeys, since from the port of Bombay it was sent to Constantinople and then to Bulgaria, where it was used to adulterate the oil of rose .

Even in our days it is used in perfumery, often instead of the more expensive rose essence, but also to isolate the geraniol.
