Somatic therapy

Terms: somatic therapy and psychosomatic medicine

The Greek word " soma " means the "body". The adjective " somatic " therefore indicates all that is relative to the body. By contrast, we have the adjective " psychic ", which is called what belongs to the mind and, sometimes, in a foreign sense, to the soul. Somatic therapy does not make such a strict distinction.

" Psychosomatic " instead tends to seek a correlation between a somatic disorder, often generic, to a cause of a psychological nature. Psychosomatic medicine represents a precise branch of medicine that puts the mind in close relationship with the body, or rather the emotional and affective sphere with the soma, or the disorder, trying to identify and understand the influence and scope of an emotion is able to exercise on the physical side.

The therapy therefore consists in proposing to the subject a whole series of useful information aimed at making him capable of interacting with his own body. In doing this, different techniques are used. Often, emotional blocks are pulled out of the patient through artistic practices, such as dancing or singing. Instead, there are those who use trance and hypnosis, those who colors, those who relate. Who's talking. Who just listens.

Somatic therapy

By somatic therapy we mean a therapeutic modality according to which postures and movements causing pain are linked to the subject's emotional and mental health problems. Stress or anxiety involves taking unnatural postures and muscle tightening. His neck, shoulders and stomach are often affected.

Somatic therapy does not act mechanically on the body to remove pain. Being a holistic therapy, somatic therapy tells the patient why the problem is found and suggests ways of eliminating pain through correct postures and stretching with regards to the body. The therapist's goal is also to bring out the emotional causes of pain, thanks to a strong empathy with the patient.
