Harmony between physiological energies in Tibetan medicine

When something breaks, it does not always produce noise and often the damage does not manifest itself immediately. When that something is the harmony within the body, the matter is even more delicate. Tibetan medicine aims to maintain the balance between mind and body and to restore it in case of alterations of physiological energies. Let's find out which and how many are the active forces that live there according to Tibetan medicine.

The energies of the body according to Tibetan medicine

In Tibetan medicine the physiological energies are 3 and are connected to the 5 elements, which are Space, Air, Earth, Water and Fire (in traditional Chinese medicine we have the same elements, except Space, whose place is taken from the Metal). The physiological energies, if altered by passions of an insane nature, incorrect respiration, wrong lifestyles, interrupt the link with the 5 generating elements and it is there that, according to Tibetan medicine, the path of health is lost by advancing in that of the disease .

These energies or "Humors" are:

- Wind

It is associated with the elements Space and Air . This energy corresponds both to movement and to the faculty of thought, mental activity . It is located in the nervous system, considered as a complex "chain" of conjunction between the "rings" of the body and those of the mind and is associated with the acts of excretion and respiration .

- Bile

Associated with Fire, regulated by the catabolic function of metabolism, it influences the perception of hunger and thirst, courage and determination, as well as the state of eye health and vision.

- Phlegm

Linked to Earth and Water . This energy affects the formation of the body structure, the anabolic function, the lymphatic system, the sleep-wake rhythm and the levels of patience and tolerance.

Origin and development of energies in Tibetan medicine

These "moods" should be imagined as real energy channels that, according to Tibetan medicine, develop in the fetus around the fifth week of pregnancy. When then the human being grows, he directs his own character towards one or more humours.

On the basis of the possible energy combinations the individual will belong to one or more of the 7 constitutions provided by Tibetan medicine: there may be the predominantly Wind type, the predominantly Bile type, the Phlegm type, the mixed types like Wind-Bile, Bile - Phlegm, Wind-Phlegm and Wind-Bile-Phlegm. Mixed types are much more frequent than pure constitutions.
