In past years, Milan researchers have involved more than 2, 000 healthy, sick and different-aged women in the investigation of this report. DIANA5 has been active since 2008 and was created by evaluating the results achieved by the research that preceded it.
Objective: to reduce the occurrence of breast cancer recurrences. With DIANA5, voluntary women learn to focus attention on a healthy and adequate diet coupled with regular physical activity.
LUMEN is the reference center for all breast-operated women who work or live in Piacenza, Lodi, Cremona, Parma and Reggio Emilia.
" The results of these studies have convinced us of the solidity of the hypothesis that the lifestyle significantly conditions not only the risk of getting CM but also the risk of recurrence" - said Professor Berrino in the last conferences held with LUMEN in the last few months in the neighboring provinces of Piacenza to support the opening of the center in San Pietro in Cerro - and therefore test the hypothesis in a large experimental study with the collaboration of thousands of sick women.
To work with patients with a relatively high risk of developing a relapse in the first five years of the study - of the order of 30% - we are asking for the collaboration of women operated for invasive CM in the last 5 years, without recurrence, suffering from MS and / or with testosterone or insulin.
By enrolling 2000 patients with these characteristics (about half of those who fall ill) we will be able to understand whether the proposed lifestyle change is able to prevent at least 25% of recurrences. The study is currently underway in Milan (National Cancer Institute and European Institute of
For the headquarters of San Pietro in Cerro, Prof. Franco Berrino, Director of the Department of Preventive and Predictive Medicine, National Institute for the Study and Treatment of Cancer in Milan, requested the goal of recruiting 100 breast-operated women over the past 5 years, aged between 35 and 70 years, diagnosed with high-risk recurrent infiltrating carcinoma, who had neither relapse nor second contralateral cancer.
Currently there are 20 the first women participating in the recruitment that will remain active throughout 2010.
