How to prevent and treat candidiasis?

In most cases vaginal candida infections can be avoided by keeping the affected area dry and clean, but in case of infection it is advisable to follow a therapy that actively intervenes on the body. However the antifungal drugs used to treat candidiasis can cause side effects and lead to the development of resistant strains. A group of scholars from the Federal University of Ceara Fortaleza in Brazil tested the antifungal properties of a specific protein isolated from the seeds of Moringa oleifera . The results obtained demonstrate that the protein in question possesses in vitro antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Candida krusei and Candida tropicalis .

In particular, it increased the permeabilization of the cell membrane and the production of reactive oxygen species in Candida albicans. The data presented in this study highlight the potential use of the seeds of Moringa oleifera as a source of the protein with anti-candidiasis activity, placing it among the most effective natural alternatives to combat this pathological condition.
