10 things to know for women's self-defense

When we read the figures relating to violence against women, to assaults, to feminicides and to rapes, and we realize the extent of the problem, we are then able to evaluate, with real data in hand, the importance of self-defense, even on the subject of prevention.

It is in fact from prevention that begins self-defense, from the knowledge of the mechanisms linked to violence on the so-called weaker sex.

What are the things that every woman should know to minimize the risks related to gender violence and to know how to react and get out of harmless aggression?

1. Dress code and behavioral language

The attackers never act by chance, there are no casualties. There are always behaviors that induce the aggressor to focus on a certain type of victim .

Too much exuberance or too much insecurity are both extremes that attract certain unwanted attentions : the dress code, in unsafe contexts, is very important, especially if you are alone, without friends.

2. Alcohol and other drugs

The use of narcotic substances is closely linked to sexuality, as drugs, including alcohol, have a disinhibiting power .

Taking drugs is therefore to be avoided not only because it hurts, but also because it amplifies the instincts, makes them less controlled, more unprepared and less able to assess risks.

As for alcohol, it is good to drink (provided it is moderately) in safe contexts, with trusted people, without accepting drinks offered by strangers.

Alcohol damage is greater for young people

3. Escape and shouts

As banal as it may seem, starting to run and shouting are, statistics in hand, the two factors that more than any other manage to send an attempt at violence to nothing .

These two elements are present in almost 90% of the cases of violence that have not been carried out, since the aggressor fears to be discovered, seen and captured and therefore desists. It is enough for someone to look out a window intrigued by the screams to increase the chances of the attacker escaping.

4. Get off the ground

Whether we react to aggression or not, in 90% of cases we end up on the ground, and in almost all of them, we end up back on the ground . The first impression is terrible, it seems to be doomed, dominated, with no escape, but if you study martial arts you will find that this position is not as terrible as it seems.

Martial arts based on ground fighting can give us a thousand tools to turn the situation around and get the better, whatever the initial disadvantage in terms of strength, size and weight. In this sense, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, grappling and Sambo are recommended.

5. The central line

If you intend to react to an aggression, it will be useful to know where to strike . Forget about movies and workouts: all the most important points where to hit in case of life or death are along the center line of the body: top of the head, nose, eyes, chin, throat, mouth of the stomach, genitals, nape, spine dorsal . All these parts immediately stop the aggressor, the others can only cause pain and then make him angry further.

6. Objects to defend themselves

Fear sometimes paralyzes us and we do not realize how useful a set of keys, a purse, an umbrella, heels, a mobile phone can be : any object is useful for impressing an attacker .

The primary purpose should be to break free, run away and shout that, as mentioned, is one of the most effective weapons. Spray chilli? On balance, all types of sprays, including lacquer or deodorant have a terrible effect on the eyes and can help us find an escape route.

7. Martial arts

A serious study of martial arts or a combat sport will certainly give us the means to react to aggression. But you have to be realistic: no one can teach you how to swim without going into the pool, which means: to learn to fight you have to try to fight and martial arts that don't foresee this often don't work properly.

Moreover, attackers are often more than one and this changes the whole context: it is good to be able to evaluate before engaging in a fight.

8. Slap or punch?

Often the slap is not really effective while a badly given and bare hands punch can hurt the hand. What to do? A middle ground: the palm stroke .

The palm of the hand, close to the wrist, is strong and resistant and much less sensitive than the knuckles; at the same time it is able to express much more force than a simple slap .

9. Violent partners

When you have a new partner, be attentive to the slightest manifestation of violence and make a correct assessment, above all never minimize it. The overwhelming percentage of violence against women occurs at home and in the family, and it is important never to give a violent partner the chance to make normal behavior that is not normal .

10. Sixth sense

Follow your meaning . Do not accept the company of those who do not inspire you, avoid a road that you do not like at all. Hurry up when you feel exposed and look for the crowd when you have the feeling that someone is following you or watching you. Do not hesitate to call any friends or law enforcement agencies .
