Pomegranate and natural antioxidants

The pomegranate fruit, the pomegranate to be exact, is one of the tastiest superfoods that nature gives us.

It is rich in vitamins C, K and polyphenols such as gallic acid, punicafolina, ellagitannins with a strong antioxidant action to counteract free radicals.

In herbal medicine we find pomegranate supplements recommended for its antioxidant, antimicomenotic, antibacterial, anticoagulant, anti-tumor action .

About the latter aspect the pomegranate is rich in Punic acid which has been shown to be an inhibitor of breast cancer.

The pomegranate fruit is a bearer of B vitamins, of mineral salts such as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

Its anthocyanins protect the skin from UV damage.

Its polyphenols slow down the processes of cellular aging, protect the heart, promote the formation of good cholesterol, HDL, compared to that dangerous for the cardiovascular system. It is an excellent supplement during menopause.

Maqui, antioxidant from Patagonia

Maqui is a bit like blueberry, with its blue berries and is part of the large family of natural antioxidants. This remedy also counteracts oxygen free radicals, the cause of cellular aging, thanks to the anthocyanin component.

Maqui in particular contains a high dose of delphinidin, which stimulates the immune system by promoting the production of interleukin 2, cytokines and interferon gamma. It also performs an anti-inflammatory activity controlling the development of degenerative diseases.

Maqui also protects our cardiovascular system by promoting the production of HDL, good cholesterol and protecting LDL from oxidation. Improves eyesight, regulates blood sugar, protects connective tissue.

Based on the ORAC tests, which indicate the absorption capacity of oxygen free radicals, Maqui is one of the most powerful antioxidants among those with anthocyanins ; however, these tests have many incongruities, so we take these data as a whole without dwelling too much on the details.

Goji, natural antioxidant

Goji and its red berries are one of the most famous natural antioxidants.

Its antidegenerative property is attributable to 4 LBP polysaccharides : they support the immune system, thanks also to a derivative of vitamin C, also the high content of carotenoids stimulates the production of white blood cells for the defense of the body. Goji is also called the fruit of long life and is a valid anti-aging ally against free radicals, thanks also to the anthocyanins that protect the skin.

The beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene component protects tissues against aging, strengthens hair and nails and also helps slow down the physiological degeneration of the eyes.

Melatonin, not just for sleeping

Melatonin is produced by our pineal gland at night, in the dark. It regulates the sleep / wake rhythm, but it is also a powerful antioxidant. The role of melatonin is very important for safeguarding cardiovascular well-being. Reduces cholesterol in the blood, prevents the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, reduces hypertension.

Melatonin is both hydro and liposoluble, so it can act in different cellular environments. On the market we can find melatonin supplements of 1 mg.

What Antioxidant Means

The antioxidant action is directed towards the effect of oxygen, the oxidative element par excellence. Our cells need oxygen to live, but at the same time under certain conditions oxygen triggers free radicals that degenerate cells with oxidizing activity. Free radicals are produced by mitochondria as a result of metabolic reactions, and by certain habits of our life such as smoking, alcohol and stress.

Fortunately , our body has endogenous, self-produced antioxidants, such as glutathione which is enriched and strengthened by selenium through certain foods that we introject. It is therefore good to enrich our diet with foods and supplements rich in antioxidants to preserve our well-being.
